Ghosts on the Grand, a free City Games scavenger hunt, runs through Oct. 31, sending players around Grand Rapids to solve clues, answer trivia and find playful ghosts.

♟️ This might be the ultimate roadside attraction for chess fans.

Sitting outside the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis is a massive wooden king, and it’s even bigger than our graphic says. The current version stands an incredible 20 feet tall, weighs 10,860 pounds, and is certified by Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Chess Piece.

The king is made from African sapele mahogany and is 53 times larger than the tournament-sized Staunton king it was modeled after. It was unveiled in 2018, replacing an earlier record-setting giant king that stood about 14½ feet tall.

And St. Louis takes its chess seriously. The Hall of Fame sits in the city’s Central West End, directly across from the Saint Louis Chess Club, in a city that has become one of the major centers of American chess.

So, yes, we need to correct our graphic from 14 feet to 20 feet. Good catch to verify this before posting.

Google is such a familiar name today that it’s hard to imagine typing anything else into that search bar. But back in 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s Stanford search project had a very different name:

BackRub. 😂

And there was actually a reason for it. Their search engine analyzed the web’s backlinks, the links connecting one website to another, as part of determining which pages were important. So “BackRub” was a nerdy little play on exactly what the technology was doing.

Thankfully, the name didn’t stick. The project eventually became Google, a name inspired by the mathematical term “googol,” which means a 1 followed by 100 zeros. The enormous number fit Page and Brin’s ambition to organize a seemingly enormous amount of information on the web.

Just imagine the alternate universe, though.

“Hang on, I don’t know the answer. Let me BackRub it.” 😂
