FREE film screening opportunity!

Smoke Signals is celebrating nearly nine years as one of the few independent Tribal publications in all of Indian Country. During the Indigenous Journalists Association 2025 Indigenous Media Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, held Aug. 13-15, Smoke Signals had the opportunity to chat with IJA board member, journalist and independent press advocate Angel Ellis (Muscogee (Creek) Nation).
Ellis starred in the Sundance award-winning film “Bad Press,” which documents the struggle she championed for a free press within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
Ellis and the “Bad Press” producers have generously agreed to provide a free, virtual viewing of the film from Friday, Aug. 22 through Monday, Sept. 8. We invite the entire Grand Ronde community and others to watch this real-life struggle for sovereignty.

You’re Invited to Tarweed Awakening Corvallis!

Join us on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in downtown Corvallis for a community celebration rooted in Kalapuya heritage. This FREE event invites you to explore and honor the cultural legacy of the Kalapuya homeland, Champinefu (now Corvallis) through four immersive experiences.

Why Attend?
Tarweed (pictured here) is much more than a plant: its emergence symbolizes the cultural awakening of Champinefu, the Kalapuya land of the Marys River (“Pinefu”) and the Ampinefu people who belong to that place.
