The first Almost Heaven swing in Preston County found a pretty perfect home at the Bruceton Mills Dam. 😍 Between the water, the mountains, and that iconic swing, this is one photo stop worth adding to your next drive through the area.

What if your next train ride came with a Wild West showdown? 🤠🚂

Hop aboard the Greenbrier Express for one of West Virginia's most unique rail adventures. This scenic steam-powered train winds through the breathtaking mountains of Pocahontas County—but during the Wild West Special, the journey takes an unexpected turn.

Just when you think it's a relaxing ride, outlaws appear, a bank robbery unfolds, and the train is "taken over" for an unforgettable ride back to Cass. Complete with reenactors, stunning mountain scenery, and lunch included, it's an experience the whole family won't forget.

If you thought the video was wild…there’s SO MUCH MORE to this story 👀

Built in 1893, the estate originally belonged to James Ellwood Jones, the son of coal magnate Jenkin Jones and a coal baron and inventor in his own right. And the family certainly didn’t skimp on the details—more than 20 rooms, a sweeping ballroom, and 66 intricately designed stained glass windows imported from Scotland.

Over the next century, those walls would witness unimaginable tragedy, become tangled in one of the country’s most infamous banking scandals, attract ghost hunters searching for the unexplained, and eventually be lovingly restored.

And somehow, its story is STILL being written. Today, the Powerhouse ATV Mountain Resort sits on 10 scenic acres in Maybeury, sleeps up to 15 guests, and offers direct access to the Hatfield–McCoy Trails. It’s a place where you can come for the history, stay for an ATV adventure—and maybe keep an ear out for those unexplained footsteps 😂

It’s not quite Almost Heaven…but it’s ALMOST Almost Heaven 😉💙💛

WV Living publisher Nikki Bowman Mills recently crossed the state line and visited Paint Bank Virginia, for the first time—and came home wishing we could claim this tiny Allegheny Mountain town as our own.

We’re talking roaming buffalo, an old-fashioned general store, a restaurant with an indoor creek and swinging bridge, a restored grist mill, glamping, a historic depot you can sleep in, and the colorful Lemon Hotel along Potts Creek.

Population: around 40.
Charm: completely off the charts!

It’s the kind of Appalachian place that makes you forget which side of the state line you’re on. And while we promise we haven’t forgotten this is WEST VIRGINIA Living, every once in a while, a neighboring place feels enough like home to earn a spot in our “Almost” Almost Heaven series.
