Bear River girls volleyball has a new career kills record and it's senior Eden Cha. She broke the record on Saturday and stands on top of the leaderboard with 1,361 all-time kills (before Tuesday's game). Cha broke Sara Schell's record of 1,292, which was set in 2013.
"It was a goal I wanted to reach, because my parents and I definitely looked at it and saw I had the opportunity," Cha said. "It’s a dream to chase, and I said it was OK if I don’t break it. But it happened."
Coach Matt MacDonald knows better than anybody just how amazing Cha is.
"She’s special," he said. "Every once and while you get the kids who come through that have something different about them — they way the train, the way the practice, the way they approach the game."
While the record, was great, it wasn't the most important thing for Cha.
"We stopped the game when she got the record, gave her the game ball and her parents had balloons for her," MacD said. "We were trying to congratulate her during the timeout but she was already thinking about the next point, just deflecting. That’s who she is."
"Yes, it’s exciting," Cha said. "I broke the school record, but also to me I was very much in the zone. I didn't want to celebrate that I broke the record; I was there to win the tournament. So it was cool in the moment, but then it was back to the team."
Your next chance to see Cha, MacD and the rest of the Bruins is Thursday at home. Freshman are at 4:30 p.m., JV at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m.
