To use the cello endpin or not to use the cello endpin? That is the question.

Historical response to the cello endpin, which anchors the instrument to the floor, has alternated between acceptance and pushback.

❤️🎶 Sunday’s concert was a powerful finale to the season—celebrating music’s ability to honor love and restore connection — and featuring the premiere of a new work by Seth Grosshandler, commissioned in tribute to a wife and an almost-lost bond—an act of both remembrance and renewal.

An evening that reminded us how chamber music can bridge distance—emotional, temporal, even spiritual.

Among friends old and new, we witnessed music not only performed, but lived—as an offering, a gesture, a reconciliation.

Thank you to Seth Grosshandler and Max Levinson, piano; Alexander Fiterstein, clarinet; Danielle Talamantes, soprano; Kerry Wilkerson, baritone; Yehuda Hanani, cello.

Our season subscribers will receive a link to view the concert video soon.

Stay tuned for Berkshire High Peaks Festival concerts, lectures and master classes!

Close Encounters With Music

Twenty-seven years ago, Close Encounters' artistic director and cellist Yehuda Hanani began presenting thematic concerts of chamber music with commentary—at the time a novel and innovative format that has since become ubiquitous in the concert hall. In addition to tours that have taken the series to cities such as Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Omaha, Calgary, and Kansas City, Scottsdale, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Close Encounters presents concerts each season in the Berkshires--most often at The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. To date, over 100 themes have been explored in the series' programs. Click here to see our 2018/2019 schedule.

Close Encounters With Music also produces the Berkshire High Peaks Festival: an international group of violinists, violists, cellists and pianists who converge for intensive instrumental study and chamber music coaching with distinguished faculty. At the base of Mount Everett, The Berkshire School’s 400-acre campus in Sheffield, Massachusetts offers a breathtaking setting and a destination for world renowned arts and culture in the heart of the Berkshire Hills. The Berkshire High Peaks Residency (formerly Catskill High Peaks Festival) has evolved into a training program designed to imbue players with new ideas and approaches, inspiration, and tools for technical advancement.

Learn more about us--and how we bring chamber music and dynamic classical music education to The Berkshires and beyond.
