Meet the Galentines, nominee in the 'On the Rise' category of the 2025 Colorado Sound Music Awards!

All-female rock band the Galentines put on blazing shows last year, and put out a debut album, 1140. Their website features an image of the gals smiling in an idyllic local mountain setting, looking like the latest sweethearts-of-bluegrass Boulder act, but the group’s music is more Strokes, the Donnas, and the Runaways. “Sink Into Bed” and other Galentines tunes include straightforward indie rock with less-than-straightforward lyrics. 1140 is a promising debut and Galentines is a must-see young band.

Meet Wes Watkins, nominee in the 'Outstanding Secret Ingredient' category of the 2025 Colorado Sound Music Awards!

Wes turned heads with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats and the Other Black, but the trumpeter and eclectic multi-instrumentalist now mostly performs genre-defying sounds under his own name. And he's equally compelling playing jazz trumpet or singing Sam Cooke. “Another,” a 2024 single, mixes quotidian poetry with bouncing, eccentric alt-R&B while his more subtle work, such as “Hey World,” finds him regaling Planet Earth like a wistful cabaret singer on a hot New York night. Watkins can play virtually anything with anyone, and if you spend enough time in Colorado you’ll probably see him doing so.

Meet Ritmo Cascabel, nominee in the 'Outstanding Stage Presence' category of the 2025 Colorado Sound Music Awards!

Self-dubbed as “cumbiadelica,” the exquisitely crafted music of Denver’s Ritmo Cascabel is the perfect soundtrack for a western set in Mexico or a Friday night at the Hi-Dive with folks trying to learn traditional dance moves without spilling their margaritas. The band's 2013 debut album was recorded in Mexico City and mixes piano and organ with gorgeous, bright guitars and hypnotic percussion. Live, Ritmo Cascabel (which translates to “rhythm bell”) is known for delighting audiences with complex, stop-on-a-dime originals that are as psychedelic as they are soulful.

Meet Roots Music Project, nominee in the 'Scene and Heard' category of the 2025 Colorado Sound Music Awards!

Dave Kennedy founded the Roots Music Project in Boulder as a place for his blues band to rehearse and perform, inspired by the fun his kids were having in School of Rock. In 2022, Roots went into light-speed as a music venue for all kinds of genres, from metal to classical, also holding regular workshops, lessons, burlesque performances, and even live podcast recordings. Today they seem to have something going on almost every night of the week, along with curating events in the area.
