A series of television commercials featuring Donald Trump talking about fighting communism, touting tax cuts, and highlighting job growth have begun airing with a surprising tag at the bottom: "Paid for by the U.S. Government." Tracking firms report that the spending quickly scaled up to millions of dollars just weeks before the midterm elections. While past administrations have used public funds for informational public service campaigns like health insurance sign-ups or vaccine rollouts, ethics watchdogs and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are calling foul, pointing out that these spots resemble campaign advertising rather than public education. Critics argue the spending could violate rules like the Hatch Act and federal anti-propaganda laws, though the White House maintains the ads promote executive branch messaging without explicitly backing an active candidate.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Friday to let the Trump administration use its overhauled SAVE database to check voter rolls for noncitizens, with the three liberal justices dissenting. SAVE is a roughly 40-year-old DHS system built to verify immigrants' eligibility for public benefits, but the administration expanded it last year to pull in Social Security data and let states upload entire voter lists at once. In June, federal Judge Sparkle Sooknanan blocked the revamped system, finding it was haphazardly assembled, relied on unreliable citizenship data, and violated federal privacy law. Tens of millions of voter records had already been run through it, and some eligible voters flagged as possible noncitizens in Republican-led states had their registrations canceled. The government still has not released the system's error rate. Because federal law bars systematic voter purges within 90 days of an election, the ruling's effect on November is likely limited.

School districts along Wisconsin's Lakeshore are paying the price for record diesel costs. Mishicot now spends about $2,500 a week on fuel, up from $1,500, and Two Rivers says its fuel bill is 137% higher than last September. With budgets already locked in, administrators say field trips and extracurriculars could take the hit. The national average for diesel hit $6.53 per gallon on September 22, the highest level on record, according to AAA, driven largely by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and other oil routes, along with high cost of refining. For Wisconsin schools, this lands on top of a longer squeeze: in 2009, lawmakers and Gov. Jim Doyle decoupled per pupil revenue limits from inflation, and since that time, they have not kept pace. That gap is a big reason districts across the state keep turning to property tax referendums just to maintain programs.

Wisconsin Public Service is defending its request to raise electric rates 6.3% in 2027 and another 3.5% in 2028, while consumer groups urge state regulators to cut the utility's profits instead. For a typical household, that adds about $16 a month by 2028, on top of a 7.33% hike approved in late 2024. WPS also wants its allowed return on equity raised from 9.8% to 9.9%, while the Citizens Utility Board says lowering it to 9.1% would save customers about $54 million in 2027 alone. Parent company WEC Energy Group reported $1.6 billion in profit last year. Lazard's 2026 cost analysis puts new utility solar at $40 to $98 per megawatt hour and onshore wind at $37 to $99, compared to $51 to $129 for new combined cycle gas plants and $144 to $276 for gas peaker plants. Hydro and geothermal have less room to grow here, since Wisconsin's big rivers are already dammed (WPS owns several older hydro plants that are cheap to run) and the state lacks the underground heat needed for geothermal power plants, though home geothermal heat pumps can still lower heating bills. Advocates say WPS could keep rates down by building more wind, solar and battery storage instead of new gas plants, and by backing community solar rather than lobbying against it.

Milwaukee residents are demanding the city end its contract with Flock Safety after two MPD officers were criminally charged with misusing the department's license plate reader system, with a third officer still under investigation. Emilio De Torre of Milwaukee Turners, the city's oldest civic group, argues the system amounts to warrantless surveillance of everyone, not just criminal suspects, and is pushing the Fire and Police Commission to recommend killing the contract.
