Proposed Southold Chicken Farm May Become a Fruit & Vegetable Farm

The owner of a property on Ackerly Pond Lane in Southold who had proposed an egg-laying chicken farm earlier this year is planning to instead begin an “organic produce farm focused on fruits and/or vegetables,” according to a Sept. 3 letter from the applicants’ attorney on file with the Southold Town Planning Department.

Southold Hits The Books On Community Housing Code Updates

As public awareness of the North Fork's housing affordability crisis deepens, the Southold Town Board on Tuesday heard a comprehensive update on major code changes the town says need to be implemented before it begins spending the $8 million-plus it has collected in its Community Housing Fund.

"All of this stuff is actively being drafted. No one here has the brakes on at all," Town Planner Mara Cerezo told the Town Board at its Sept. 9 morning work session. "As much as you want to be at the table with us going forward, we're here."

Flush With Cash, Suffolk Promises Faster Septic Grant Process

There have been several hiccups along the road since Suffolk County launched a grant program in 2017 to help homeowners install new nitrogen-reducing septic systems, but this summer the county has relaunched the application process through a streamlined online form — with up to $45,000 in funding available to each homeowner.

Energia Internacional Celebrates Latin American Music on the North Fork

The Rites of Spring Music Festival will host a weekend-long series of performances celebrating Latin American song and dance, from Sept. 11 through Sept. 13.

It’s “three days of community gatherings where participants can share arts, music, fashion, traditional dishes, economy and social practices,” according to Rites of Spring founder Paolo Bartolani. “Come relaxed, come curious, connect with the people around you, and experience the energy of the music.”
