The Splendid Turntable

The Splendid Turntable WQFS-FM show that transports you back to the sound and spirit of album rock radio and turntables.

WQFS, 90.9 FM, Greensboro, NC | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn https://tunein.com/radio/WQFS-909-s22152/

I'm giving you some music you just don’t get to hear on the radio much any more, along with some of the best music being made today. The radio industry named the format AOR, which stood for album oriented rock. Critics of the format said AOR stood for “any old record” though, because they couldn

't wrap their heads around staying away from the hits and digging deeper into album cuts from the rock and psychedelic acts of the 60s and 70s. The Splendid Turntable is not affiliated with a certain public radio program with a similar name. That said, this program does focus on the culture, the history, the backstories and the deeper meanings that come together every time people sit down to enjoy music.

Of the 31 titles here, I only own (or used to own) seven. But I've known, loved, and still stream most of the others. And then there's those 3-4 that either I never liked or I'm so sick of that I never, ever, want to hear again. (Just another reason to listen to non-com college radio, because they don't beat the same dozen records to death!)

Which ones are in your collection?

31 essential classic rock albums, from Zeppelin to Bowie, that shaped an era with riffs, melodies, and timeless, genre-defining innovation.

We know we're showing our age big time, but we still think of Ron Wood as the new guy in the Rolling Stones. Guess we might oughta come into the 21st century, no?

Ronnie Wood is marking 50 years with the Rolling Stones with Paint It Black, a new collection of paintings that features portraits of him and bandmates Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the late Charlie Watts.

One of Joni Mitchell's most acclaimed albums, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, was released 50 years ago this Monday, on November 17, 1975. It was decidedly not a critics' favorite at first, but it grew in stature over time and in 2020, Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 258 in its 500 greatest albums of all time. We'll mark the 50th anniversary of its release this Monday morning in our next set of "50 in '25" - tune in to hear which track gets the spin.

The Splendid Turntable returns to WQFS Guilford College Radio next Monday morning after a short break this week, and music selection for the show is going strong. We'll hear a track from this record, which I bought in 1973. I'd never heard sounds quite like this before - it was one of those turning points in my musical journey that shifted me headfirst into country/bluesy-flavored rock & roll.

BTW, I was previewing the record on my 1978 JVC turntable that still works. I reckon I keep old stuff around because I am old stuff. 😎
