The Splendid Turntable

The Splendid Turntable WQFS-FM show that transports you back to the sound and spirit of album rock radio and turntables.

WQFS, 90.9 FM, Greensboro, NC | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn https://tunein.com/radio/WQFS-909-s22152/

I'm giving you some music you just don’t get to hear on the radio much any more, along with some of the best music being made today. The radio industry named the format AOR, which stood for album oriented rock. Critics of the format said AOR stood for “any old record” though, because they couldn

't wrap their heads around staying away from the hits and digging deeper into album cuts from the rock and psychedelic acts of the 60s and 70s. The Splendid Turntable is not affiliated with a certain public radio program with a similar name. That said, this program does focus on the culture, the history, the backstories and the deeper meanings that come together every time people sit down to enjoy music.

2 SHOWS NEXT WEEK:
The Splendid Turntable airs Mon, Oct 13, 8-10am EDT, with yet another splendid morning of FM album rock. We’ll feature vintage music from Nick Lowe, Ray Charles, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, Dylan, Feat, Tom Waits, Mother’s Finest, and many more. Plus new tracks from Laura Boswell, Jared Gentile, Neko Case, and Nation of Language, just to name a few.

Chip & Don return Wed, Oct 15, 2-4pm for a slightly spooky Halloween music show. DJ Don is the Halloweeniest guy we know, and we’ll turn him loose Wednesday afternoon. Tune in to hear some predictable, and some not so predictable, haunted music. Think Satchmo, Alice Cooper, Howlin’ Wolf, The Rabbit Council, The Diamonds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Ted Cassidy and plenty other ghoulish sounds. It’s creepy how an AI image can look so real, right? Hehe. Just be glad they didn’t put us on the graveyard shift.

Picture yourself in a boat on a river today, listening to “The Life and Music of John Lennon” on what would be John’s 85th birthday. If you tap the link, you can be listening; you gotta provide your own boat and river though. Hear some of John’s music from the Beatles and his solo career, mixed in with highlights from his professional and personal life.

It’s a program we originally aired on WQFS on December 8, 2023, the 43rd anniversary of John’s death. The breaks have been removed, so the total length is just under an hour. We can virtually sit here watching the wheels go round and round, remembering John together.

Whoa, a Rush reunion tour. Sure hope they bring some cameras along since they won't be anywhere near us here in NC.
