I'm 25 (F), and I've always known I was adopted, as Margaret reminded me constantly.
"You were adopted. You should be grateful I saved you."
Those were the words I grew up hearing from the woman who raised me.
My adoptive father was gentle and caring, but he passed away when I was only 10.
Life growing up was never simple.
Whenever tears would come, she only said, "You should be grateful."
She made sure everyone knew I was adopted, and soon at school, the kids started calling me "the orphan girl."
I learned to keep quiet, always striving to be the "grateful" daughter she demanded.
For 25 years, I accepted her version of my beginnings—that she had "saved" me from a difficult fate.
But one evening, following another fight with Margaret, my best friend asked:
"Sophie… have you ever wondered who your REAL PARENTS are?"
At first, those words didn't matter much, but their echo lingered for weeks until curiosity finally won.
That morning, we visited the orphanage where Margaret had claimed to adopt me.
The receptionist searched the computer and frowned.
"I'm sorry, but there are no records of you. ARE YOU SURE YOU WERE ADOPTED?"
My stomach dropped. It didn't make sense.
Needing answers, I went straight to Margaret's home.
She answered the door, and I immediately said:
"I was at the orphanage. There are no records of me. WHY DID YOU LIE? WHO AM I?"

ELEVEN BLACK ROLLS-ROYCES lined the street. Men in suits flowed toward my door like a tide. I stepped onto the porch, Clara against my chest, heart pounding.
"OMG, WHO ARE YOU?!" I gasped, voice small and fierce. "And what do you want with us?"
