Tonight, on Voice of Salone (VOS) Politics and Economics, we examine major developments shaping Sierra Leone’s governance, economy, constitutional order, education sector and public accountability.

Budget Advocacy Network (BAN) is raising questions over a reported NLe365.2 million in import duty unaccounted for in 2024/2025. BAN Coordinator Abu Bakarr Kamara breaks down the findings and what they could mean for revenue collection, transparency and public financial management.

We also examine concerns from the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU). President Ibrahim Bankapoma Kargbo says teachers will return when schools reopen but warns that effective teaching may be difficult because third-term school fee subsidies have reportedly not yet been paid and schools lack essential supplies.

Francis Ben Kaifala, Esq. outlines two possible paths for changing Sierra Leone: a gradual process of changing mindsets or a much tougher system based on discipline, rules, standards and accountability.

The Police Complaints Board has also reportedly clarified that recording police officers while they are on duty is not, by itself, a crime, raising important questions about citizens’ rights, policing and accountability.

Former Attorney-General Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) has broken his silence on the 2015 removal of former Vice-President Samuel Sam-Sumana, saying the judges in the case “did not do justice.” Meanwhile, Dr Sylvia Olayinka Blyden is challenging aspects of JFK’s account, arguing that the chronology of the subsequent ECOWAS Court litigation contradicts claims about when he entered the matter.

Sierra Leone is also facing another major constitutional test. Two members of the Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone have filed proceedings in the Supreme Court seeking interpretation of the voting threshold and parliamentary procedures used in the purported passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2025. The applicants are asking the Court to determine whether constitutional procedures were followed and whether the purported passage could be declared null and void.

On the economic front, new Finance Minister Karefa A. F. Kargbo has outlined priorities including fiscal discipline, domestic revenue mobilization, deficit management, stronger fiscal space and improved cash-flow management.

We also revisit reports concerning President Julius Maada Bio’s 2014 letter to then-President Ernest Bai Koroma, in which Bio reportedly opposed efforts to extend presidential tenure — a position attracting renewed attention amid today’s constitutional debate.

At the centre of the discussion is the latest controversy surrounding the proposed Lungi Bridge, following reports that U.S. Ambassador-Designate Daniel Travis has spoken about a company associated with the proposed construction of the bridge. What exactly was disclosed? How advanced is the project? What has the Government of Sierra Leone clarified about the investment arrangement, financing and construction plans? Police cited Section 17(2) of the Public Order Act No. 46 of 1965, which gives the Commissioner of Police authority, under specified circumstances, to disallow or impose conditions on processions.
