Ministry of Information and Civic Education Signs Landmark MOU with Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone

Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 8, 2025 — In a landmark move to strengthen civic engagement and academic collaboration, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone. The official signing ceremony took place at the Minister’s office, symbolizing a shared commitment to advancing government communication, civic education, and national heritage preservation.

Present at the event was the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Kelleh Gbawuru-Mansaray, who expressed deep appreciation to the Minister for extending this partnership to the country’s oldest university — an institution that has produced many of the nation’s distinguished professionals, including several individuals present during the ceremony.

Professor Gbawuru-Mansaray underscored the university’s readiness and capacity to deliver on the pillars of the MOU. These include collaboration in areas such as government communication — aligned with the Department of Mass Communication; national history and civic awareness — linked with the Department of History and Political Science; and the preservation of government archives — relevant to the Department of Library Archive and Information Studies.

He emphasized that the university welcomes this opportunity with gratitude and looks forward to implementing the agreement through meaningful initiatives. He also noted that FBC has a strong track record of partnerships and is eager to see this new relationship flourish through shared goals.
The Minister of Information and Civic Education, in his remarks, thanked the leadership of Fourah Bay College for embracing the partnership. He highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration, stating that it marks a significant step toward deepening public understanding of national issues and promoting civic responsibility, particularly among young people and students.
He further noted that this partnership extends beyond the local context, referencing collaboration with international partners such as New York University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. These expanded partnerships, he said, are designed to enhance the quality and reach of civic initiatives in Sierra Leone.

As part of the agreement, the Ministry and the University will co-organize national civic events — one of the first being the upcoming Sierra Leone Independence Day celebration. While the country marks its independence on April 27th, a national commemorative event will be held on April 28th at the Fourah Bay College Amphitheatre, in what is expected to be the first of many joint national engagements.

The ceremony concluded with the official signing of the MOU, followed by a warm exchange of pleasantries between the Ministry and University leadership — setting the tone for a dynamic and fruitful collaboration in the months and years to come.

P*e Cee Holdings Ltd signed $12 million loan facility with the IFC at its onion farm in Lokomasama. The facility is designed to support P*e Cee and Sons Agri-buisness to undertake large scale cultivation and commercialization of onions in a bid to significantly reduce imports.

The 500ha project will also position Sierra Leone to become an exporter of onions to neighboring countries. This is a significant milestone towards realizing His Excellency Julius Maada Bio’s Feed Salone program. Bravo CEO Mahesh Nandwani for growing local and creating jobs for hundreds of Sierra Leoneans. I am happy to be part of this journey.
