Modern Dry Fertilizer Facility Underway in City of Greensburg, Kansas
- Construction has officially commenced on a new, state-of-the-art dry fertilizer plant in Greensburg, signaling a major leap forward in operational efficiency and economic impact for the region. Lance Nelson, Vice President of Agronomy at Alliance Ag & Grain, announced the details of the project, which aims to better serve local farmers and the company's member-owners.
The new 5,400-ton dry fertilizer shed is located just west of the Alliance Ag and Grain elevator. Groundwork is already highly visible to passing residents. According to Nelson, the primary motivation behind the facility is to introduce a higher level of innovation and speed to their services.
"The company really is wanting to become efficient and more innovative to service our member-owners faster and more efficiently," Nelson stated.
Economic Boost and Community Impact
The project timeline spans from the present through mid-October, when the company hopes for full completion. Residents can expect to see a surge in concrete activity starting the week of July 27, followed by the er****on of structures and the arrival of heavy equipment in August.
The months-long construction phase is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to the Greensburg community. Workers will be filling local hotels, utilizing available housing venues, purchasing groceries from local businesses, and frequenting town restaurants. Beyond the immediate construction phase, the facility will drive long-term commerce and increased truck traffic, drawing in customers within a 40-to-50-mile radius of the location.
Local leadership has also noted the long-term benefits of the development.
"The City of Greensburg is excited for the investment Alliance Ag and Grain is making in our community with the addition of this new facility," said Greensburg City Administrator Stacy Barnes. "It will have a positive local impact, not just during the construction but long term through traffic to the facility and value added to our tax base."
Unparalleled Technological Efficiency
The facility's crown jewel is its implementation of Kahler Automation. While the technology is currently utilized in Alliance Ag and Grain's liquid facilities, this marks the first time it will be applied to a dry fertilizer project.
Additionally, the plant will feature an innovative dust-control system that applies a fine mist of linseed oil to the fertilizer during product reception. This coating completely eliminates dust, drastically reducing required housekeeping and ensuring a clean environment both inside the facility and on surrounding roads.
The vision for the facility has been a decade in the making, following the amalgamation of six member cooperatives. With the company's growth, the board of directors determined the time was right to move forward to benefit the company, its members, and the community at large.
