🇺🇸 LAKE ARIEL: Since 2006, the Help A Hero Fund has placed American flags in The Hideout community’s Reflection Park in remembrance of local veterans.
Each year before Memorial Day, the fund creates its “Field of Flags.” Each flag represents 1,000 American lives sacrificed in service to the nation.
On Saturday, about 30 volunteers from The Hideout, including members of the Board of Directors, placed 1,355 flags in the grass, creating a red, white and blue display ahead of Memorial Day.
The fund was established in 2006 by Bob Wiegand, a retired New York Fire Department battalion chief, and Bill Wagner, a retired New York Police Department detective. Its mission is to provide financial assistance to local police, fire, EMS, security and military heroes and their families in times of need.
Wiegand and Wagner, both Hideout residents, responded to and assisted at Ground Zero following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The fund grew out of The Hideout 9/11 Memorial Committee, which was formed in 2004 to raise money for The Hideout’s 9/11 memorial, known as Reflection Park.
In addition to providing financial assistance, the fund conducts and hosts The Hideout’s annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony, Veterans Day Roll Call and brunch for veterans and their spouses, and the annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony.
Since its founding, the Help A Hero Fund has donated more than $53,000 to local heroes and their families and has also covered the costs of two funerals.
