Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Products and Contracts Engineer David Kent presented the latest updates on a $28 million M-66 corridor reconstruction project to the Ionia City Council on Wednesday.

Next year, M-66 will be redeveloped between Wells and Tuttle, and a non-motorized pathway will be added to make the chain stores and fast food restaurants at the top of “Meijer hill” more accessible for those who do not drive.

“I know there’s been a lot of conversations on Facebook and other places about this, with a lot of questions,” Kent said. “We’re trying to get this presented (to the public) so people can ask questions and voice concerns.”

Renovations on Belding’s future city hall are moving forward, but city officials say staff may not relocate until early next year as they await bids for major building systems.

The city has spent about $112,000 on renovations so far at the building at 115 E. Main St., according to a Daily News request of expenditures, although major costs for HVAC, electrical and information technology systems have yet to be determined.

As Amelia Urlaub approached the finish line Saturday morning, she was beyond exhausted.

A first-time participant of the 13th annual Tri Greenville Triathlon, she had spent months training in preparation to swim, cycle and run.

Following a troublesome bicycle, a wrong turn on the course and multiple walking breaks during the run, the 20-year-old Midland resident finally crossed the finish line.

Having finished near the back of the pack, Amelia could have walked away discouraged and disappointed. Instead, she raised her arms into the air as her family — holding signs and oversized cutouts of her head — roared in excitement, celebrating her arrival.

“I saw my family, they had our big heads, they were yelling and cheering, and that meant everything,” she said. “Not many people can say they’ve done a triathlon.”

(this story is free to read from behind the paywall) JUST IN: Coliform bacteria has been detected in the water in the village of Sheridan, MI, meaning a boil water advisory continues.

The village’s water tower experienced a separation of a main line, which caused the system pressure to drop on Tuesday. The village tested the water and has since found coliform bacteria. The village sent out an email this afternoon with the results of findings.

Village officials anticipate resolving the problem within the next 48 hours.

A Sheridan man scrolling through Facebook and Snapchat on his phone in the moments before he crashed into a horse-drawn buggy, killing an infant girl and injuring multiple others, may have been careless, but he was not criminally reckless, according to his attorney.

Trenton Gregory-Michael Young, 25, is charged with one count of reckless driving causing death (a possible 15-year felony) and three counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment (possible five-year felonies).

Young’s attorney Dan Burns recently presented a motion to quash before Circuit Court Judge Ronald Schafer, arguing that District Court Judge Adam Eggleston wrongly bound Young over for trial. Judge Schafer will issue an opinion on the motion in the near future.

Nearly one-quarter of the newly graduated class at Montabella High School shares more than a diploma — 12 of the 51 seniors are part of six sibling pairs.

The class of 2026 includes a dozen siblings: The Pant twins, the White twins and the McCarthy siblings, as well as the Wymer brothers (whom the Daily News profiled in a feature on May 16), the Houghtons and the Knapps.

“Having a family member in your class can provide unique experiences; some good and maybe some more challenging,” said Montabella High School Principal Shane Riley. “While we often say a small school is like a family, in this case that is actually the situation.”

Among the 1,781 athletes who competed at Saturday’s Division 3 track and field state finals in Kent City, Central Montcalm sophomore Zade Kooistra found himself on top of the podium not once, but twice.

Kooistra turned in championship performances in both the adaptive 100-meter dash and adaptive shot put, capturing state titles in both events to cap off a remarkable debut season for the Hornets track and field programs.

“It means a lot, especially for the adaptive community,” he said. “It shows them that stuff like this is available and that we’re able to compete and be with our friends and compete at the same event as them. It’s really cool.”

He set a new personal-best time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 27.37 — a new state record — and won the adaptive shot put with a throw of 10’ 3.5”, just an inch-and-a-half off his personal record.
