On this day in 2002, Box Car Racer released their debut (and only) studio album through MCA Records. Produced by Jerry Finn, the record featured Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker of blink-182 alongside guitarist David Kennedy and Anthony Celestino, who later joined as the band's bassist after DeLonge recorded the bass tracks for the record.

Inspired by post-hardcore bands like Fugazi and Refused, the album showcased a darker and more experimental sound compared to blink-182’s work at the time, blending elements of post-hardcore, emo, alternative rock, and melodic punk.

The album featured guest appearances from Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Jordan Pundik of New Found Glory, while blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus appeared on “Elevator” (the only Box Car Racer song to feature all three blink-182 members together).

In late 2002, the band toured across North America in support of the album. However, Box Car Racer dissolved in 2003 as tensions began to rise between DeLonge and Hoppus, who felt betrayed after not being included in the project. Those tensions would later contribute to blink-182’s 2005 breakup.

More than two decades later, the project’s legacy continued when blink-182 included “Terrified” on their 2023 album One More Time..., a song originally written by Tom and Travis for Box Car Racer. Reflecting on the decision to finally release the track, Hoppus said: “My old ego would've rejected the Box Car song out of hand but this whole album was about getting past all that s*it and just making music. It turned out so good.”

In a recent interview on the BrooklynVegan Interviews Podcast, hosted by Bill Pearis, Mike Ness was asked to name the five albums that everyone should have in their collection.

The Social Distortion frontman selected a mix of punk rock, glam, and classic rock records.

His picks were:

Ramones - Ramones (1976)
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St. (1972)
T.Rex - Electric Warrior (1971)
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)
S*x Pistols - Never Mind the Bo****ks (1977)

The selection reflects Ness’ deep roots in punk rock while also highlighting the influence of classic rock and glam artists that helped define his musical taste and songwriting over the years.
