Weather Check at Moosehead: 🌬️
The lake’s looking a little angry today — 49° with wind gusts up to 28 mph! 🍂💨 But don’t worry, there’s still some color hanging on for all you leaf peepers.

The Weight of Water 💧

Many of you have followed our journey with my daughter, Emily — my assistant editor — and her son, our little miracle, Atlas William.

At just 9 months old, Atlas was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder called Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus (NDI) — a condition that prevents the kidneys from retaining water, leaving him constantly at risk of dehydration. Emily first learned of his diagnosis while he was hospitalized with meningitis — his sodium levels were not sustainable for life. He spent nearly a month in the PICU and finally came home with a feeding tube (which he still has today) and a list of medical challenges.

Atlas now has 10 specialists. Most recently, Emily took him to Bangor for an MRI of his brain. We’ve been waiting anxiously for the results — and yesterday, we got them. There’s good news, and there’s some hard news. Along with his NDI, Atlas has been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy.

We’re sharing this because our readers and followers have become like family to us. Many of you have sent prayers, messages, and kindness that have carried us through the hardest days. And we want to thank you — for your patience when an email went unanswered, a call wasn’t returned right away, or a story had to wait. We are only two… and for a while, we were only one.

While Emily was carrying her “water baby,” I was carrying her.

This photo shows the strength of the woman I’m proud to call my daughter — who recently hiked Mount Kineo with Atlas on her back. Together, we’ll keep climbing, step by step, with courage and love.

Thank you for being part of our journey — for lifting us up when the weight of water felt too heavy to carry alone.

The season is wrapping up in East Cove!

Docks are being removed and stored for the winter as the lake settles into its quieter months. It’s always bittersweet to watch this annual ritual — a sure sign that fall is giving way to winter on Moosehead Lake.

Where did your dock days take you this summer? 🌅

This Wednesday at "Our Senior Lounge"

Maureen Army, COMT, CLVT, from the Maine Division of the Blind and Visually Impaired, will return for an extended conversation on vision health and care.

The session begins at 10:30 a.m., and Maureen encourages attendees to bring their lunch so the discussion can continue through 1:30 p.m.

There will be no other programming that day, but the Senior Lounge will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with hot coffee, a new puzzle on the board, and plenty of comfy chairs to sit and chat.

All are welcome to stop by and take part in this informative and engaging program.

The newspaper life isn’t always glamorous! 🗞️

It’s 7:30 at night — Emily’s at home proofing pages and sending edits my way while I make the changes, PDF each page, and email them one by one to the printer. It’s a labor of love (and a few late nights!) to make sure the Moosehead Lakeshore Journal lands in your hands just right. ❤️💻☕
