BREAKING: A federal judge deals Donald Trump a major defeat by ordering a nationwide pause on plans for the National Institutes of Health to slash "indirect" research funds to universities, medical centers, and other recipients.

This may have just saved countless lives...

Judge Angel Kelley of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts has granted a temporary restraining order after a lawsuit was filed by groups representing teaching hospitals, public health and pharmacy schools, and hospitals in the Boston and New York areas.

This nationwide pause is an escalation of a previous restraining order that Judge Kelley granted yesterday in response to lawsuits from 22 state attorneys general. That order applied only to the states who had sued.

This is our system of checks and balances in action. Trump and Elon Musk are trying to gut our entire federal government so that the super-rich and corporations have even more power. In their ideal world, we are an oligarchy rather than a republic.

If that means destroying crucial research that improves the lives and health of average Americans, Trump and Musk are willing to pay that price.

On Friday, the NIH under Trump ordered a shocking 15% cap on payments for indirect costs which include utilities and support staff. The cap was aimed at hobbling these institutions and destroying the lifesaving work that they do.

Most medical research in the United States is supported by NIH funding and it includes over 2,800 hospitals, medical schools, universities, and other research institutions.

The research includes efforts to cure cancer and tackle chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
