Well, I lapped myself 😜 I took so long posting last fall’s travels that I ended up back in London before I’d finished. My daughters both graduated college this month, so we had a fantastic girls’ trip to my favorite city. They’d not been before.

These photos are from our first day wandering around the city. The statue at Paddington Station; St. Paul’s; statue of the poet John Donne; the girls at Leadenhall Market; three photos from St. Dunstan in the East; and Tower Bridge.

I first fell in love with the music of Starlight Express back in the 1980s (since I’m just that old). But I didn’t get a chance to see it until 2025. it was everything I’d ever hoped it could be! The production just finished its run in London, and will be going on tour. I hope I can see it again, but I’m so very thankful I had the chance last October. To all the wonderful cast and crew, best of luck with whatever comes next!

I love the area around Parliament and Westminster Abbey, especially in the morning. It’s IMHO the most iconic area of London because so many big sights are there, including Ben Ben and the London Eye. I’m really excited to go back soon and share this special place with my daughters!

Happy Independence Day to the Conch Republic!

The Conch Republic is a tongue-in-cheek “nation” declared by Key West, Florida on April 23, 1982 after a U.S. Border Patrol roadblock frustrated locals and hurt tourism. In protest, the mayor jokingly “seceded” from the United States, staged a mock battle, then promptly surrendered and requested foreign aid—turning the whole moment into a brilliant act of civic humor. Today, the Conch Republic lives on as a symbol of Key West’s independent spirit, laid-back attitude, and refusal to take life too seriously.

And that couple in the first photo? They’d just gotten engaged. I have no idea who they are but I hope they’ve been very happy together!

Ever wonder if it’s worth your time to go to the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London?

This one is a no-brainer! Yes it is! The tickets aren’t expensive and it’s not too hard to get them anymore (unlike when you had to use snail mail). It lets you be right in the middle of a centuries-old tradition. For over 700 years this ceremony has been used to lock the Tower each night.

This was on my bucket list and what made it even better is that I recognized the Yeoman Warder leading the trip as soon as he came around the corner. It was none other than Chris Skaife, former Ravenmaster and author of the same-named book! (And a highly-recommended read!)

I’m really excited to get to do it again in just a few weeks. Now I just need to figure out how to get invited to the Beefeaters’ pub… 🍻

On our last trip to London, we stayed at the beautiful Park Hyatt in Nine Elms. Although it was a bit farther from the city center, it’s a gorgeous area of town. And it let us get up close and personal with Battersea Power Station. Most famous for gracing the cover of the 1977 Animals album by Pink Floyd, it has now been preserved as a high-end shopping center. Nearby, we enjoyed a brewery and then lunch at Dishoom.

The second photo is the US embassy. I don’t know what the third one is. There were definitely some unique buildings nearby. And the SIS building, home of the headquarters for MI6, was just across the river. That’s the fourth building.

The next-to-last photo is the view from our hotel room. We could also see the Shard skyscraper but it’s not in that photo. The location is close to the Vauxhall tube stop, so it’s easy to get anywhere in town.

I’m going to London again soon, but staying at a less posh hotel closer to the sights. In what part of town do you like to stay when you visit London?

Mussels in Brussels?

Yes, please!!! I love mussels but these may have been the best I’d ever had. Throw in a Cantillon gueuze and you’ve stolen my heart.

Indonesian food in Amsterdam? You better believe it! A “rijsttafel”, or rice table, is one of their specialties. You get a lot of different small dishes, so you can try many different tastes. Each one was better than the last!

I kept the original video because it’s funny how overwhelmed we were. But we finished every morsel. 😋

The restaurant is called Sampurna and I highly recommend it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I lived in Amsterdam, I would be the size of a canal boat because I would eat these every day with zero regrets!!!
