One Dead After Being Found Trapped Under Tree

Union City, Ohio- An unidentified male subject has been confirmed dead Tuesday evening following an incident in which a tree is believed to have fallen on them. At approximately 5:55 p.m., emergency personnel from Union City Fire and Rescue responded along with CareFlight and deputies from the Darke County Sheriff's Office to the 1000 block of State Route 571 West in reference to a tree that had fallen on a subject.
According to the initial reports, an unknown male subject had been either cutting down or trimming a tree behind a residence on the 1000 block of State Route 571 West when, it is believed, the tree fell on and entrapped the subject. 911 was called following the discovery of the downed subject and CPR was performed until the arrival of Fire and EMS crews to the scene.
Despite life saving measures, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene after succumbing to their injuries.
State Route 571, from Pickett Road to Hill Grove-Woodington Road, remained closed to traffic for nearly an hour while crews established a landing zone for CareFlight and ultimately deputies and the Darke County Coroner's Office conducted their investigation.
Updates to this incident will be made as additional details become available.
This incident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Darke County Coroner's Office.

Early Morning Accident Sends Two To Hospital

Gettysburg- Two people suffered injuries Tuesday morning as the result of a rollover accident with intrapment. At approximately 5:59 am, Darke County Deputies along with Gettysburg Rescue, Gettysburg Fire, Bradford Rescue and Bradford Fire were dispatched to the 5700 block of Gettysburg-Pitsburg Road in reference to a two-vehicle injury accident.
According to the Darke County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed a blue 2024 Nissan Rogue driven by Arnson Desir (32) of Dayton, Ohio was traveling northbound on Gettysburg-Pitsburg Road when he traveled left of the centerline, striking a southbound tan 2012 Chevy Impala driven by Anthony Oda (28) of Bradford, Ohio. The impact caused Desir’s vehicle to overturn, coming to rest on its top in the middle of the roadway. Oda traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a cornfield and a concrete post.
Mr. Desir and Mr. Oda were both transported to Wayne HealthCare for further evaluation with minor injuries.
Mr. Desir was issued a citation for driving left of the centerline.
This incident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

Former New Madison Firefighter/EMT And Darke County Sheriff's Deputy Identified As Victim Of New Madison Fire

New Madison- The Darke County Coroner's office has identified the victim of the Saturday August 2nd fatal fire in New Madison, as Rock A. Kiser, age 69, of New Madison.
Mr. Kiser was removed from his home Saturday afternoon by firefighters after neighbors noticed and reported smoke coming from the residence. Despite life saving measures Mr. Kiser was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr. Kiser has been described as "a person who loved his community and had a compassionate heart." Mr. Kiser served as a volunteer firefighter for the village of New Madison, EMT, and a Darke County Deputy Sheriff.
Rock was reported to be "a very sociable man, and very generous in support of his community", up until the death of his parents. It was at this point in time, due to his loss, he became known as "The Hermit of New Madison" by those in the community around him.
The cause and nature of the fire remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office.
A funeral service for Mr. Kiser will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville. Burial will follow at the Greenmound Cemetery, in New Madison. Family and friends may visit with Rock's family on Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Tribute Funeral Homes, in Greenville.

Darke County Man Charged With Third DUI Following Crash

Greenville- A Darke County man was arrested and charged with his third DUI Sunday evening following a single vehicle crash outside of Greenville. At approximately 6:26 p.m., emergency personnel from Greenville Township Emergency Services and the Greenville City Fire Department responded along with deputies from the Darke County Sheriff's Department to the 2900 block of State Route 571 West in reference to a single vehicle accident unknown on injuries.
According to the Darke County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed that a black Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling eastbound on State Route 571 West. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 40 year old Justin Taylor of Darke County, lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons and traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Chevrolet struck a mailbox, continued off the roadway eventually colliding head on into a utility pole breaking it into two pieces. The vehicle then travelled further eastbound before coming to rest on the edge of a steep incline leading into a ditch.
Mr. Taylor was examined by EMS on scene however declined any further treatment or transport to a medical facility. Mr. Taylor was then placed under arrest for the suspicion of DUI and transported to the Darke County Jail where he remains in custody.
This incident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

Two Airlifted Following Suspected Alcohol/Drug Related Crash

GREENVILLE- Two people were airlifted early Friday evening following a three-vehicle crash that officers say may have been caused by excessive speed, drugs and alcohol. At approximately 5:42 p.m., emergency personnel from Greenville Township Rescue, Greenville City Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue, Gettysburg Rescue, MedFlight and CareFlight were dispatched along with the Greenville City Police Department and the Darke County Sheriff's Office to the intersection of Ohio Street and East Main Street in reference to a reported three-vehicle crash with injuries.
According to the Greenville Police Department, a preliminary investigation into the accident has revealed that a vehicle traveling eastbound on East Main Street ran a red light and collided with two other vehicles that were lawfully proceeding through the intersection. Initial reports indicated that at least 2 people were entrapped within the vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency crews.
Two individuals were airlifted by both CareFlight and MedFlight to Miami Valley Hospital of Dayton for what have been described as serious injuries. Three additional individuals were transported by ambulance to Wayne HealthCare of Greenville for non-life-threatening injuries. The identities and conditions of those involved remain unknown at this time.
Initial findings suggest that speed, alcohol, and drugs may have been contributing factors in the collision. The intersection remained closed for several hours while officers conducted their investigation into the accident along with the assistance of the Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
This incident remains under investigation by the Greenville Police Department.

DARKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES MAKE MULTIPLE DRUG ARRESTS

Beginning in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies began executing multiple arrest warrants throughout Darke County and the surrounding area. The arrests come after a seven month undercover investigation by Darke County deputies into illicit drug trafficking in Darke County. A Darke County Grand Jury recently handed down a total of 24 indictments for persons with a combined total of 61 counts of drug trafficking, and 5 counts of permitting drug abuse/sales. Those being sought on charges reside in Darke, Miami, Preble, and Montgomery Counties, all charged with selling illicit drugs in Darke County. The Darke County Special Response Team, Greenville Police Department, Preble County Sheriff’s Office, Union City Police Department and Eaton Police Department assisted in these arrests as well as the Montgomery County Range Task Force and US Marshals Service. Darke County Prosecutor James Bennett will be prosecuting the case in the Darke County Court of Common Pleas.
The following subjects were arrested upon indictment as part of this operation.
Richard L. Armfield, age 45 of Greenville, OH – 2 counts of Aggravated Trafficking in Drugs Felony of the 3rd degree & 1 count of Aggravated Trafficking in Drugs a Felony of the 4th degree.
Melissa S. Beavers, age 41 of Greenville, OH – 3 counts of Permitting Drug Abuse/ Sales a Felony of the 5th degree.
Phillip E. Fetters age 36 of Greenville, OH – 1 count of Trafficking in Drugs near a school a Felony of the 4th degree & 2 counts of Trafficking in Drugs a Felony of the 5th degree.
Raymond J. Harris age 62 of Union City, OH- 4 counts of Trafficking in Ma*****na a Felony of the 5th degree.
Jordan R. Hudson age 21 of Greenville, OH – 3 counts of Trafficking in Ma*****na a Felony of the 5th degree.
Mark A. Martin age 36 of Dayton, OH – 4 counts of Trafficking in Co***ne a Felony of 4th degree.
Sean B Milligan age 53 of Brookville, OH – 6 counts of Aggravated Trafficking in Drugs a Felony of the 3rd degree.

Danielle M. Woods age 43 of Greenville, OH – 1 count of Aggravated Trafficking in Drugs a Felony of the 4th degree.
Troy D. Yeomans age 47 of Gordon, OH – 1 count of Trafficking in Drugs a Felony of the 3rd Degree & 1 count of Trafficking in a Fentanyl related compound a Felony of the 4th degree.

Additional arrests are anticipated in this drug trafficking investigation. The success of this investigation is the result of multiple agencies working together and tips from citizens in Darke County.
Darke County Sheriff Mark Whittaker states that illegal drug trafficking in Darke County communities will not be tolerated and he will continue to collaborate with all law enforcement agencies in Darke County and other surrounding areas to address this issue.

- Commercial Structure Fire in Greenville Ohio -

On July 22nd, 2025 at approximately 9:31 P.M, crews from the Greenville Township Fire Department, City of Greenville Fire Department, Gettysburg Fire Department, Versailles Fire Department, Union City Fire Department, Ansonia Fire Department, Rossburg Fire Department, and Liberty Township Fire Department along with the Greenville Police Department and Darke County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 7600th block of Greenville-Celina Road on a Structure Fire at C&T Rental.

Upon the arrival of fire crews, active flames and smoke were observed emitting from the single story commercial building. Crews were notified that everyone inside the building was evacuated safely.

The members of the various fire departments were able to contain the fire to the single structure, and worked tirelessly to extinguish it.

The exact cause for the fire is unknown, however the scene remains under investigation by officials.

Multiple Children Injured In Two Vehicle Accident

On June 28, 2025 at approximately 12:35 pm, Darke County Deputies along with Arcanum Rescue, Arcanum Fire, Greenville Township Rescue, Tri Village Rescue, New Madison Fire, Care flight and Med Flight responded to the intersection of State Route 503 and Hollansburg-Arcanum Road in reference a two vehicle injury accident.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 blue Toyota Sienna driven by Holly Rogers (34) of Greenville, Ohio was traveling eastbound on Hollansburg-Arcanum Road. Rogers failed to yield the right of way while crossing the intersection, traveling into the path of a 2024 Kia van which was northbound on State Route 503, driven by Jake Sheard (34) of Ithaca, Ohio. Sheard struck Roger's vehicle on the passenger side with Roger's vehicle coming to rest in the grass and Sheards vehicle remained on the roadway.
Roger’s and her juvenile passenger both had to be extricated by mechanical means. Rogers was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Care Flight and her 14-year-old female passenger was transported by Med Flight to Children’s Hospital in Dayton, OH. Roger’s and her juvenile passenger’s conditions are unknown at this time. Sheard was transported by Greenville Township Rescue to Wayne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and his two juvenile passengers were transported by Tri Village Rescue to Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
This accident remains under investigation by The Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Dirt Bike Involved Crash Sends Area Teen To Hospital

An area teenager suffered serious injuries Monday evening after the motorcycle he was operating collided with another vehicle. At approximately 7:27p.m. Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Gettysburg Fire and Rescue responded to the 8000 Block of Martin Road in reference to a two-vehicle accident with injury.
According to the Darke County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed that an Orange 2021 KTM 85cc Dirt bike, driven by a juvenile, was traveling south on Martin road. The male juvenile failed to negotiate a curve, traveling into the opposite lane of travel causing a collision with a green 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Adam Bucklew (50), of Greenville, Ohio.
The Juvenile was transported to Wayne Hospital, then later transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital to be treated for his non-life-threatening injuries. Mr. Bucklew was uninjured as a result of this accident.
This accident remains under investigation.

Fatal Crash Claims Life Of Motorcyclist

A fatal crash outside of Arcanum has claimed the life of a 52 year old Brookville man. At approximately 7:33 p.m. Darke County Deputies along with Arcanum Fire, Arcanum Rescue and CareFlight were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 49 and Hollansburg-Sampson Road in reference to an accident with injury.
According to the Darke County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed a red 2024 Kawasaki Ninja being operated by Steven Copenhaver (52) of Brookville, Ohio, was traveling northwest on State Route 49 at Hollansburg-Sampson Road. A white 2016 GMC Terrain being driven by Rebecca Harleman (64) of Bradford, Ohio, was stopped at the stop sign on Hollansburg-Sampson Road facing east. Ms. Harleman attempted to cross over State Route 49 but failed to yield the right of way to Mr. Copenhaver, causing the accident. Mr. Copenhaver was then ejected from the motorcycle.
First responders immediately rendered aid and began CPR on Mr. Copenhaver upon their arrival to the scene. Mr. Copenhaver ultimately succumbed to his injuries sustained from the accident on scene.
Mr. Copenhaver was wearing a helmet at the time of crash. This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
