Access to Elite Programs
In the heart of the Palmetto State lies one of college sports’ most passionate and historic rivalries…the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the Clemson University Tigers. Covering either of these programs is a privilege in itself, but having the opportunity to report on both …in real time, on the ground, and within the culture of their fanbases …. is an honor that few in sports journalism take lightly.
Every matchup between South Carolina and Clemson is more than just a game …it’s a cultural event. It’s a family divided at Thanksgiving, a sea of garnet or orange on church pews Sunday morning. Covering these games means understanding that you’re not just documenting stats or scores …you’re capturing legacy. Whether it’s Death Valley roaring under the lights or Williams-Brice Stadium shaking to “Sandstorm,” the electricity is unmatched.
Clemson has become a perennial football powerhouse, regularly competing for national titles under Dabo Swinney. South Carolina, meanwhile, has built powerhouse women’s basketball under Dawn Staley and continues to rise across other sports. Covering these programs means rubbing shoulders with future pros, Hall of Fame coaches, and some of the most committed athletes in the nation.
Being entrusted with access to these spaces is no small thing. It’s a responsibility …to report truthfully, fairly, and passionately. The stories here matter to people. They resonate. Here’s to another year of covering the Carolina area… let’s make a good one!
