Nominations for the 2026 JCO Eugene L. Gottlieb Student of the Year, presented by American Orthodontics, are now open! Head to www.jco-online.com for more information. We are kicking off our Q&As with the 2025 Award finalists, starting today with Dr. Charlie Arndt, from UT Health San Antonio:
Can you tell us a little about yourself? For example, where are you from? What to do you like to do for fun? What is your family like?
I was raised in a small, rural community in southern Iowa. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading, baking, and being active. I have been married to my husband for five years, and we have one child.
Why are you pursuing a career in orthodontics?
What I love about orthodontics is the ability to develop great relationships with patients over the course of the treatment. You can provide a wonderful transformation with orthodontic treatment, and you can treat siblings and families.
Can you describe the path that led you to UT Health San Antonio?
From the amazing residents to the inspiring faculty, I knew UT Health San Antonio was where I wanted to be. I am thankful that the match process worked out, so I could complete my orthodontic training at this amazing program.
What has surprised you the most during your orthodontic education?
There are so many ways to get a great outcome. I have loved learning different techniques and approaches from my faculty!
What has been the most difficult part of becoming an orthodontist?
Since there are so many ways to do things, there is no one “right” answer or method. This is very different from other areas of my education up to this point, and it was an adjustment from how I was used to learning.
What, so far, has been your most rewarding orthodontic experience?
The most rewarding part has been working with my surgical patients. They have a dramatic change from before to after care, both in their smile and also their profiles. Especially adult patients—they are so excited and grateful for the outcome of care.
What are your postgraduate plans?
I am joining a practice in East Tennessee.
What do you think orthodontics will look like in 10 years?
I think orthodontics will involve more artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI is being integrated into so many industries and fields, so I’m sure it will impact the way dentistry and orthodontics is practiced in the next 10 years.
