Some people make music. Dolly Parton made the entire world feel a little brighter, kinder and considerably more colorful.

She could write a song that broke your heart, deliver a one-liner that made you laugh and then quietly put a book in a child’s hands that might change their future.

Country music lost its brightest rhinestone today, but legends like Dolly don’t really leave us. They live in every songwriter brave enough to tell the truth, every small-town dreamer who refuses to think small and every child who discovers a bigger world inside a book.

Thank you, Dolly, for the songs, the laughter, the generosity and for proving that someone could be larger than life without ever acting bigger than anyone else.

Rest easy, Dolly Parton. Country music will always love you.

🍺 How many beers does it take before proper grammar becomes optional?

📱 Why does whiskey keep convincing grown adults to text people they worked very hard to get over?

💒 If your ex is drinking water at her wedding: is she being responsible, or is there a plot twist coming?

💔 And how many country singers does it take to prove your relationship was a terrible idea?

I’ll provide the music, the observations and just enough confidence to make completely unqualified relationship advice sound official.

There will also be a few moments with real heart, because even Papa knows when to stop talking and let the song do the work.

Gather around, kids. Papa has reviewed tonight’s playlist, and apparently it’s one long cautionary tale.

First, Greylan James goes to his ex’s wedding, notices she’s drinking water and starts doing math that probably should have been completed before the invitations went out. Papa’s advice: eat your chicken, congratulate the groom and leave before somebody hands you a microphone.

Next, Kacey Musgraves reports a 335-day “Dry Spell.” Papa’s advice: keep your standards high, don’t get desperate and stay away from the appliance aisle.

Fortunately, Luke Combs comes along wanting to “Be By You,” because every questionable country story eventually needs a good man in a johnboat. When you find someone who makes anywhere feel like home, keep them.

Finally, Lainey Wilson is running ten minutes late and looking for her “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” but she hasn’t forgotten the person who keeps her grounded. Papa’s advice: marry the person. AirTag everything else.

I’ll be offering six hours of advice you didn’t ask for tonight from 6 PM to midnight on KMZU. We’ll have great country music and absolutely no licensed professionals supervising any of it.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IN THE MIDWEST.

The official kickoff to:
sunburns, Busch Light, bad decisions, and grown men saying “watch this” right before a minor emergency.

By Saturday afternoon:
some dude named Kevin is gonna be shirtless, standing next to a smoker he barely knows how to use, explaining the “science of brisket” like he works for NASA.

Lake of the Ozarks is about to become America’s largest floating collection of:

- tribal tattoos
- gas station sunglasses
- upside down visors
- and pontoon captains with the confidence of an airline pilot and the balance of a baby deer.

Also…nothing, and I mean NOTHING, builds character like jumping into a Midwest pool in May because everybody’s pretending:
“Once you get in, it’s fine.”

No it ain’t, Randy. Your turtle is hiding near your spinal cord.

And somewhere this weekend there’s gonna be one guy getting way too emotional after 7 beers talking about his high school football career from 1994.

God bless America.

Take a break from work this weekend. Laugh hard. Eat too much. Hydrate occasionally.

And please…if your bluetooth speaker starts sounding like a Missouri State Fair after midnight, it’s time to go home.

Huge night for Cody Johnson and Ella Langley. Brooks & Dunn take Duo of the Year…which could have just as easily went to the Bellamy Brothers, or the most deserving duo…Dan & Shay. Great musical performances. Shania as host…I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. But she looked great and it was cool seeing her back in the arena.
