doesn't quite live up to the previous film, but has enough fresh story beats and jokes to keep you pretty entertained throughout its 2 hour run time. Jack Black shines again with a hilarious performance and all the new characters are also fresh additions!

was exactly what I wanted. Incredible racing action, amazing performances by Bale and Damon and a well paced story. Apart from a few sub plots that felt a little undercooked at times - I thoroughly enjoyed this film and could easily see myself going back for another watch. 8/10

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) is the best major video game film to date. It is funny, it has heart and it doesn’t shove nostalgia down your throat.

The special effects hold up quite well all-round and the score is actually really good. As a fan of all things cinematography, I was interested to know that this movie was shot on film - and for good reason because it is a gorgeous looking movie.

Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu and I can’t believe it...but he was perfect. He always managed to throw a few adult jokes in there and still packed that emotional punch when needed. My only gripes with the film was that you can tell the lead actor struggled with the fact that his co stars were CGI and the story at times felt super basic and expositional (to keep the child demographic informed).

It really did bring the Pokémon universe to life and was extremely vibrant and entertaining.

“Pet Sematary” (2019) is a decent horror flick with some truly terrifying moments.

Strong performances from the main cast carried this film a long way, especially in long drawn out sequences that could’ve ended up quite boring. Instead, they filled the audience with absolute dread and always managed to make us jump.

Speaking of jumping. Way too many jump scares, I think a few is fine, but too many just become cheap. There is nothing worse than a horror film that only has cheap scares. This film had a mixture of both well deserved and truly horrifying frights mixed with jump scares.

I especially liked a certain sub plot that I wanted to look away from screen every time their was a flashback and wish the film was more like that. But I think sticking with the motif throughout paid off better.

All in all, I think it’s another decent Stephen King adaption but I presume it’ll be overshadowed by Jordan Peele’s “Us” (2019) when it arrives in cinemas.

“High Life” (2019) is a provocative piece of science fiction cinema that aims for the stars and achieves to grasp the audience and take them for a slow burning ride that surely will last an emotional impact.
Although themes can be heavy handed in parts (which I must say I didn’t find to be a negative) the story creeps up on you until the final frame where you are delivered a stomach sinking feeling that will stick with you after the screening.
Robert Pattinson provides another incredible performance and proves that he is way beyond his Edward Cullen days, stringing together “Good Time” (2017) and now “High Life” (2019), we can expect only greater and more original pieces of work in the future.
One final shoutout to the jaw dropping cinematography and sound track. Inspiring to say the least and on repeat until it’s Blu-Ray release.

I’ve said it many times before and I will say it again, A24 can do no wrong.

“Alita: Battle Angel” surpassed my expectations - a popular manga story that is to be adapted for the big screen doesn’t usually bring a lot of success, but this is different for “Alita”.

Now whilst sometimes the script is a bit janky, or the plot line a bit too simple - “Alita” makes up for that in incredible special effects and performances from lead Rosa Salazar and supporting actor Christof Waltz.

With some effective action sequences and a sequel that I can actually see being worthwhile - I think “Alita: Battle Angel” took the best bits from the source material and created a visually deep, entertaining movie to munch on some popcorn to and have a good time.

I give this film a 7/10.

“Aquaman” (2018) is a wonderful step in the right direction for their DCEU.

Burdened by a lousy script and awful performances by Nicole Kidman (surprise!) and some of the younger actors - this film also suffers from a few too many hit-and-misses in terms of humour...

but don’t let that hold anyone back from what is a thrilling adventure featuring some extremely well shot action sequences and CGI (that was absolutely snubbed from Oscar noms). IMO, it is better than Black Panther - where I am actually excited to see a sequel in the future.

As always, a shout-out to all the Australian filmmakers involved, you all helped in creating a film that has made me feel that DC films can compete against to MARVEL films once again.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” (2018) is quite possibly the best Spider-man and top 5 superhero films of all time.

With completely original animation, a relatable and entertaining story that dives into themes never treated and Easter eggs for days - this film is a must watch for any moviegoer of any age.

“The Favourite” (2018) is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth) and is a satirical period piece taking place in 1708.

With the brilliant subplot of Britain at war with France, Queen Anne seems to have more important things on her mind. Whether that be her lovely children (rabbits) or the discovery of Abigail (Emma Stone) a maid who once was a lady that keeps overstepping her boundaries.

As the film plods along we uncover a web of secrets and situations that give Abigail an “in” with the Queen but Sarah (Rachel Weisz) sees right through her and tries to intervene.

The cinematography was fresh and it’s use of wide angles was genius! The writing (co-written by Australian Tony McNamara) was exhilarating and seemed all new. The performances were great all around with Olivia Colman likely to get an Oscar nomination along with production design and costumes!

The downfall of the film for me was the purpose. Like all of the Yorgos Lanthimos films, they are strange and unique but sometimes lack a certain substance that I feel you need to have to leave the cinema fulfilled.

I didn’t get the ending especially. Which left me sitting there with what felt like another great set up but still not 100% satisfied by the end.

I think you should check it out to watch something fresh and a lot different to anything that is usually released but really expect some whacky plot points!
