A week after beating Boiling Springs in overtime, Riverside football looked poised to take down yet another Spartanburg County foe on Friday night. The Warriors led for most of the game, but a late Trey Burke touchdown pass to Keyvion Ferguson gave Spartanburg a 20-19 win.

Mike Owens is a HIGHLY-accomplished referee, having officiated SC high school football for 44 years.

Before this season began, he decided 2025 would be his last.

But Owens didn’t want his last year to be mundane. He wanted to go out with a bang.

So, Owens called up his 5 best referee friends — David Pitts, Jeff Owings, Scott Patterson, Brian Shealy, and Tommy Stribble. 3 of them were already retired.

But they agreed to come back for one more year. For Mike.

For his final season, Owens wanted his best friends to be his crew every week. Rarely does the SCHSL allow anything like it. This time, they did.

Owens and his crew have made memories each week — experiencing new schools and touring obscure sights all around the state.

Tonight, Owens officiates his final game — with his best friends by his side.

The Last Ride of Mike Owens and “The Wolfpack”:

Longtime referee Mike Owens decided that this would be his last year refereeing high school football. So, he called up his lifelong friends, his "Wolfpack", to join him as his crew for his final season.

After star WR Mikkel Skinner graduated, questions were raised about who’d step up for Riverside QB Gideon Merhib. 🏈🛡️

The answer? Well, everyone.

On the trust between Merhib and his WRs, and Riverside’s “all hands on deck” approach at the position:

After 6-foot-4 wide receiver Mikkel Skinner graduated last season, there were questions about who would fill such a big void in Riverside's offense. The answer? Not one receiver, but every one of them contributing in the Warriors' "all hands on deck" approach.

Congratulations to Eastside boys volleyball star Jonas Kelsey — voted GreerNews.com Athlete of the Week presented by D & D Ford Motors!

Kelsey had 38 assists and 6 kills in Eastside’s come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Riverside on Oct. 23, helping the Eagles advance to the 5-A D-2 Upper State Championship game.

Greer girls volleyball falls to a great Wren squad on the road in Round 2 of the 4-A Playoffs.

The Lady Jackets had a historic year — winning 21 games, the program’s highest total in over 20 years — and won their first playoff game since 2019.

Congratulations to Coach Godwin and Greer on a great season! 🐝🏐
