Last in our BCP spotlight series we have Marcel Mawulorm Johansen! MetroEast’s paid BIPoC Contractor Program (BCP) is a supervised learning experience in video production aimed to uplift marginalized creatives through career building opportunities. We're getting ready to open up applications for the next cohort so keep your eyes peeled👀
Marcel is a multidisciplinary artist from Tema, Ghana, 🇬🇭 currently based in Portland, Oregon. His art comes from a place of wonder and childlike curiosity about the world, and himself... in search of the thin through lines that thread our shared and individual human experiences. These days he often translates his experiences through film photographs, video, poetry, theatre and event production. Marcel co-produces and hosts Portland’s iteration of the on-going “RNBAFTERDARK” series at L’atelier Yaffe. In recent years he has exhibited his photos at the Archer Gallery in Vancouver, WA, Parallax Art Center, and in group multimedia exhibitions at High Low Art Space and the Rhizome, and the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center in Portland, Oregon. His photos have been published in the Pacific Review and used as cover art in Jacquelin Molina Gullen’s “Eurydice” chapbook as well as album art for Portland based artist twOn’s “The Offnsv Tapes”. Some of his latest work includes an installation made up of his written word, film photographs and analog video as part of the 2024 Portland Winter Lights Festival. He also conceptualized and performed a solo performance art piece at Shaking the Tree Theatre in the Summer of 2023. To Marcel, art is a practice in understanding, documenting and expressing the ways in which he synthesizes his own experience of this life. It shifts and changes as he does – the work is an ode to being human. You can find Marcel and his work .celus and on instagram
