Groesbeck had other newspapers prior to the Journal but none of them lasted for a very long length of time. These earlier newspapers in Groesbeck were the Groesbeck Enterprise, Groesbeck Herald, and the Groesbeck Clarion. The Limestone County New Era was a well-established newspaper in Groesbeck when the Journal was founded with the editor and owner being Layfette Lumpkin Foster. Foster served as

Insurance Commissioner at one time. Governor Stephen Hogg appointed Foster as a member of the first Texas Railroad Commission. Foster later became president of Texas A&M College (now University). A historical marker in honor of Layfette Lumpkin Foster stands on the grounds of the Limestone County Courthouse. Other editors and publishers of the Journal were Henry Ellis, B. Lawley, and Ira W. Lawley. In January or February of 1930, Jack R. Hawkins bought the Journal and was the editor-published from 1930 to his death on April 1, 1988. The Journal remained in the Hawkins family. Thomas E. (Tom) Hawkins served as editor-publisher until the Journal was sold to Moser Publishing on January 31, 2014. Jack Hawkins was ably assisted in operating the Journal all of those years by his wife, Euleta Ruth Sharp Hawkins. A Limestone County native, Mrs. Hawkins assistant county school superintendent of Limestone County at the time of her marriage. Both Thornton and Kosse had their own newspaper at one time. However, during World War II with supplies and help hard to come by, the Journal took over, The Thornton Hustler and the Kosse Cyclone. Both the Thornton Hustler and the Kosse Cyclone have had their own pages in the Journal for many years. Over the years that the Hawkins family owned the Journal, the newspaper was blessed to have many outstanding employees. No story about the Journal under the ownership of the Hawkins family would be complete without naming Jack Franklin and his wife, Nelta Mae, and Leroy Lenamon. Each of these individuals were devoted to their duties at the Journal and were employed at the newspaper for many years. The Journal has always been fortunate to have numerous other faithful and devoted employees over the years. The Journal is currently published weekly and managed by Limestone County Publishing, the current editor and general manager is Jennifer Paul.

Christmas Story & Photo Contest

Do you hear what I hear ... Sleigh bells ring, are you listening ... Chestnuts roasting … yup, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.
And your friends at your hometown newspaper are getting into the spirit of the season and are excited to announce our first-ever Christmas writing and photography contests.
The concept is simple. Similar to what we did at Halloween, we are opening up our email inboxes to draw in some wonderful Christmas stories – YOUR stories. Do you have a holiday tale that came from your past? Perhaps one that is completely fictional? Whatever it is, if the writing muse strikes, why not share it with us?
We’ll award the winning entry a first-place certificate, and we’ll publish it in the paper (and you can then say you are a published author).
Ditto with the photo contest. Send us your best photos, and we’ll give the winner a certificate suitable for framing and publish the winning entry.
In both cases, give us a Christmas or holiday theme. Then we’ll let our talented panel of judges go to work.
Here’s how it works.
-Write your Christmas-themed story (or take your photo) and send it to us.
-Don’t exceed 1,000 words – and only send us one photo.
-Connect your story/image to the Bi-Stone area somehow.
-The writing/image must be your own and original. You must own the rights to it and sign a release stating as such, as well as give us permission to publish it.
-Get it to us by noon, Friday, Dec. 12.
Pretty simple.
One winner will be selected and that stories will be published, along with the author’s name and photo, by Christmas. If the judges select any stories as honorable mentions, those will be published on our website.
How do you enter?
Simply upload at https://forms.gle/T2RtrshRLK7Dp8MJ9 or e-mail your story/photo to [email protected] or drop it off at our beautiful downtown office.

UPDATE: Nene has been returned home and is also now microchipped. Thank you for all the shares getting him home.

Does anyone recognize this little guy? He was picked up yesterday on the Northside of town. He is not microchipped. He does have a collar with the name Nene Gonzales Rodriguez on it but no other information. If you know him or are his family please let me know so I can get him returned home.

In the spirit of the season, we are putting a “Gratefulness” page in next week’s edition of Groesbeck Journal!

I am asking local leaders and community members like yourself for a couple of sentences listing things you’re thankful for this season. You can provide as much detail as you like!
We also would love a picture of you (selfie, professional headshot, family photo, whatever you prefer!) to print with your quote about what you’re grateful for. If posted before Sunday evening, you might be published in next week's Thanksgiving issue.
