Celan and Language: Cross-Cultural Greatness

This panel holds Celan as a paradigm of cross-cultural greatness. Celan spoke and wrote many languages and, at the same time, scrutinized the very nature of language, exemplifying its strengths and challenging its weaknesses. Marick Press brings to this reading and panel discussion poets, translators, and commentators that have personally contributed to our understanding of a Romanian, Jewish poet who arguably achieved the high point of his poetry in the German language.

Moderator:

Pierre Joris is a poet, translator, essayist, and anthologist who has published more than fifty books, most recently Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj (poems) and The University of California Book of North African Literature.

David Young works at Oberlin College Press. He is the author of eleven collections of poetry, several anthologies, half a dozen critical studies, and many translations, including Rilke, Montale, Petrarch, Du Fu, Basho, and Miroslav Holub.

Lee Upton's most recent book is The Tao of Humiliation. She is the author of twelve other books, including Swallowing the Sea: On Writing & Ambition, Boredom, Purity & Secrecy. She is a professor of English and writer in residence at Lafayette College.

Shane McCrae is the author of three full-length collections of poems, Mule, Blood, and Forgiveness Forgiveness, as well as three chapbooks, and has received a Whiting Writer’s Award and an NEA fellowship. He teaches at Oberlin College and Spalding University.
