What will people think?

What if my writing is bad?

What if I lose my job... or friends... or offend my parents, faith community, neighbors, and co-workers or boss... when I write the truth about everything?

Almost every author feels this fear.

Want to know the biggest secret to finally writing a book?

It's not talent.

It's not finding more time.

It's not waiting for inspiration.

It's obsession.

When I wrote my first novel, I was working full-time as a newspaper reporter in Detroit. My days were long, and life was busy—even planning a wedding—but I became completely obsessed with my dream of becoming an author.

I woke up before dawn to write.

I wrote after work.

I wrote on weekends.

I spent my free time reading everything I could about writing, publishing, and storytelling. Even when I wasn't writing, my mind was constantly developing ideas, brainstorming, and imagining scenes.

That level of focus changed my life.

Since then, I've written bestselling books, co-founded Two Sisters Writing & Publishing®, and had the privilege of helping hundreds of authors bring their own books into the world.

One thing I've noticed is that the authors who finish their manuscripts rarely have the most free time. They have the deepest commitment.

They make writing part of who they are.

And then something extraordinary happens.

Readers start sharing stories about how a book helped them heal, gave them courage, inspired them to make a change, or simply reminded them they weren't alone.

There's no greater reward than knowing your words made a difference in someone's life.

So here's today's writing tip:

Write one word on a sticky note and place it where you'll see it every day:

OBSESSED.

Become obsessed with your message.

Become obsessed with serving your future readers.

Become obsessed with finishing.
