The Shores Magazine

The Shores Magazine The Shores is a bimonthly magazine focusing on what makes St. Clair Shores a one-of-a-kind community.

08/13/2024

The production of The Shores Magazine is suspended indefinitely. Those are hard words to type and even more difficult ones to share with all of you. We’ve fallen in love with St. Clair Shores. The city’s residents and business owners carry themselves with a sense of pride. This community is one-of-a-kind, and everyone knows it.

Within 14 issues, we were privileged to not just deliver news but to tell your community’s stories. We believe that everyone has a story to share, and we’ve merely scratched the surface of the many inspiring narratives within the city. We are grateful for each person who was interviewed, trusted us with their stories and allowed us to share them in print. We have met a lot of wonderful people, many who we now call friends, making this a truly special experience.

For those who have faithfully read our publication, sent us a message, called to say how much you enjoy it, or left a positive review, your support has been immeasurable. For the countless residents who sent us pictures of your beloved pets (some of which we will not be able to print), we are in awe of the tremendous response received each issue. St. Clair Shores certainly has a soft spot for its furry friends and loyal companions!

We love our advertisers, some who have been with us since the very beginning – shoutout to Z’s Pub, Roy O’Brien Ford, Genesis Automotive, Red Baron Enterprises, Amezola Tree Service and Bradford Glass! Without you and so many others, we would not have been able to create this publication.

And please don’t forget that just because The Shores Magazine is on an indefinite hiatus, its parent company Towar Productions and the little Blue Book are alive and well. As a small, locally owned business, we’d love to help you with your print, marketing, and advertising needs.
Please reach out. We’d love to hear from you.

Best,
Kim Towar & Anna Swartz

"Stopping by local garage and rummage sales is a favorite pastime of St. Clair Shores residents John Cilluffo and Cheri Carrothers. The couple spends about two to three days per month on the hunt for the perfect items to fix, refinish and/or keep, and they host about two garage sales per year. It’s not just about accumulating or decluttering, though. It’s about human connection, too."

An article about the City Wide Garage Sale is in the June/July issue of the magazine. Watch for an issue to be delivered to your front door or a drop spot soon. If you have questions about the sale, send a DM to Cool City Committee - St. Clair Shores.

For those who would like to host a sale, registration begins the week of July 4.

Did you know that you can hit the beach and connect to nature at multiple state parks, within an hour or less from home? The June/July issue of The Shores Magazine, which comes out within the next week, features five such parks for you to explore this summer, such as Lakeport State Park (where this photo was taken). One hour from SCS in Lakeport, Michigan. Located in St. Clair County along the shores of Lake Huron, this state park spreads across 565 acres and includes a day-use area with access to swimming, a picnic shelter, barbecues, horseshoe pits and volleyball nets.

St. Clair Shores native Kyle Palermino first performed at Music on the Lake at the age of 19 with his father's classic rock and blues band, The Killer B’s, 20 years ago. These days, he’s performing with The Family Tradition Band, which he founded in 2015. Kyle remembers performing at Music on the Lake as a teen: “I was just wowed at the crowd and the community and the setup, and I still get that same feeling now.” Now a Macomb Township resident, he experiences a full circle moment every summer he takes the stage at Veterans.

Find out more about Kyle and The Family Tradition Band in the June/July issue -- expect delivery within the next week or so.

Visible from Blossom Heath Pier, Spirit Cruise Boat is in its third season of taking passengers on fun excursions on Lake St. Clair. Owner John LJ Fanti offers both private and public cruises for up to 35 people. The standard private BYOB cruise costs $990 for a 2 ½-hour excursion – that’s around $30 per person. “We get out on the lake, and we show everybody Ford Cove,” Shanti says. “We show you the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, and we go out into open water and look for ships.”

Find out more about Spirit Cruise Boat in our upcoming June/July issue, out around mid-June, or visit SpiritCruiseBoat.com.

Meet our June/July Notable Neighbor, St. Clair Shores native Kevin Backus!

Kevin feels especially at home out on, or in, the water. Lake St. Clair and the Caribbean Sea, in particular, have played integral roles in his life. The first provides his livelihood as the owner of Mr. Muskie Charters and nostalgia when he recalls learning how to fish from his grandfather Homer LeBlanc. The second is a place he has visited for close to 40 years, primarily the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, where his mother and close friends nurtured his love for boats, scuba diving and marine life.

Find out more about Kevin in our upcoming June/July issue, which will be out in mid-June.
