The Cherokee Nation is accepting applications for the 2026 Remember the Removal Bike Ride. The annual event retraces the northern route of the Trail of Tears over three weeks.

Cherokee Nation citizens between the ages of 16 and 24 chosen for the program will ride approximately 950 miles in June 2026, crossing through seven states as a testament to their physical and mental endurance. Riders retrace the same path their ancestors were forced to walk more than 180 years ago.

Applications are available online via the Gadugi Portal and require applicants to answer essay questions and provide references. The deadline to apply is Sept. 12. Read the full story in today's Grove Sun.

Delaware School, District No. 64 is located six miles north of Jay and was added to the National Register of Historic Sites in 2024. In July, the Delaware County Commissioners approved Absolute Roofing’s bid for replacing the Delaware County School’s roof and main floor.

Now the renovations are underway. The building is getting new roof trusses and concrete floor.

The rural schoolhouse was built with local limestone. Limestone buildings are common in Delaware County, including the Delaware County Courthouse and some state buildings. These buildings were common throughout the county and were used as schools and churches. They became increasingly rare as one and two-room schools became obsolete. On Monday, Aug. 25, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office learned an elderly veteran was solicited and later extorted by a man who represented himself as a government official. The men said they were federal officials and had him liquidate his bank account and purchase gold in the amount of $63,000. One of the men had an in-person pick up of the gold he purchased and was actively attempting to extort the man for an additional $200,000 to $500,000.

Delaware County’s Criminal Investigative Division (CID) conducted a two-day operation in an attempt to arrest the man who was sent to pick up the gold. With the assistance of a MidAmerica Coins in Grove and the veteran, CID investigators were able to fool the suspects and continue the communication with the victim.

On Wednesday, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested an individual who drove to the residence of the victim to retrieve a package. A search of the alleged perpetrator’s car resulted in the recovery of $90,000 in gold, including the gold taken from the victim.

Pending charges against the men include conspiracy, extortion, attempted extortion, robbery in the second degree, forgery in the first degree, forgery in the second degree, grand larceny, false impersonation, felony false pretense, and using a communication facility to facilitate a felony. The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff Ray Thomas said, “The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank this brave member of our community, as well as our local business owner who came together as a team with the Sheriff’s Office’s Patrol and Investigative Divisions to help execute this operation safely.”

The sheriff’s office says a legitimate enforcement entity will never ask you to do something of this nature. These types of calls and emails should always be considered a scam. If you are unsure, or have been victimized by anything similar, please reach out to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office to make a complaint. Republican Second District Congressman Josh Brecheen attended what was billed as a public forum in Grove Tuesday afternoon. Brecheen defended the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB) as a good deal, especially for Oklahomans in lower income brackets. However, some audience members disagreed with his analysis. He spoke for an hour and used more than 24 charts presenting his case.

The Grove forum was at 2 p.m. and was one of the five forums the congressman held on Tuesday. Several people did not get to ask questions at the forum because of Brecheen’s commitment to hold another one at 4 p.m. in Pryor. He planned five forums each day this week, taking him in a large circle from the first in McAlester on Monday, to Durant on Friday evening. Read the full story in today's Grove Sun.

Kenneth and Diahann Wiford filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in federal Northern District Court on Aug. 20. The Wifords, of Miami, owned a travel agency which closed in May 2024. They allegedly left multiple customers, who paid for trips and tickets with the travel agency, with no tickets or reservations, and left at least one employee with a bounced paycheck.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy does not involve the filing of a plan of repayment, as in Chapter 13. Instead, the bankruptcy trustee gathers and sells the debtor's nonexempt assets and uses the proceeds of such assets to pay holders of claims (creditors) in accordance with the provisions of the bankruptcy code.

In May 2024, Wiford’s travel agency had a fraud alert against it by both Discover Branson and by the Miami Police Department. Read the full story in tomorrow's Grove Sun.

The Grove Lady Ridgerunners jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and then held on as they defeated the Skiatook Lady Bulldogs 7-5 Monday evening in Grove, breaking a three-game losing streak and picking up their first victory in District 4A-7.

The Lady Red bats were hot early as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first on the strength of back-to-back doubles by Kinsey Guinn and Jade Dillinger. Dillinger had a great evening hitting as well as defensively at catcher, going 4-4 at the plate with two doubles and driving in five runs. Behind the plate, Dillinger threw out two base runners to stop potential Skiatook rallies. Read the full story in tomorrow's Grove Sun.
