Sen. Ally Seifried (R-Claremore) and Rep. Chad Caldwell (R-Enid) will host a joint interim study in the coming months to explore when it’s appropriate for schools to introduce technology into classrooms.

Seifried, Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee, and Caldwell, Chair of the House Appropriations and Budget Education Subcommittee and Vice Chair of the House Education Oversight Committee, will examine the benefits and challenges of the rapid expansion of educational technology in classrooms, focusing on its impact on the health and academic performance of elementary school students.

“As technology becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, it’s critical to step back and examine how it’s affecting our children’s ability to learn and grow,” Seifried said. “This study will help schools find the right balance between embracing innovation and teaching vital tech skills while also limiting screen time, encouraging outdoor play, and prioritizing kids’ mental health and well-being during critical years of development.”

Seifried and Caldwell will bring in local and national experts to share insights and research during the upcoming study. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

Jay senior Mondo Newcomb (WR/LB, 5’9”, 180 lbs.) makes his return back to the gridiron this year, as he missed last season due to a knee injury.

Two seasons ago, as a sophomore, Newcomb had an exceptional 2023 season where he amassed 2,070 all-purpose yards, rushed for 1,335 yards, and had 15 catches for 275 yards, as well as six interceptions on defense (three were returned for touchdowns).

The Bulldogs are excited to have him back. Read the full Bulldog Football season preview in this week's Delaware County Journal.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office has eliminated the former radio jungle in their cars. They previously had to juggle as many as five radios in order to contact various law enforcement and emergency agencies in the county.

Prior to the 911 consolidation, there were an array of frequencies used by law enforcement agencies, including both VHF and digital frequencies. This required officers to not only switch from one radio to the next but also switch channels on the radios as well. As they traveled throughout the county, they had to manually switch the radio as their signal faded to a different tower. The distraction of switching was dangerous in multiple situations, such as when they are busy pursuing a suspect.

The new E-911 radio system puts all agencies on the same digital system. But the sheriff’s office has also upgraded the deputies’ computers as well. An attorney’s general grant of $300,000 provided the funding for 48 laptops, wireless routers, and trays. The man behind the technology is Captain Josh Bynum, with the support of Sheriff Ray Thomas. Officer accessibility and safety seem to be the ultimate goal.

With the new computer, officers “have instant access to everything within our network. We have instant connect to our computer,” Bynum points out. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

A new chapter is taking shape for the Kansas Comets softball team as they head into the fall season with a younger lineup and high expectations.

“This year, we will start more underclassmen compared to last year,” said Head Coach Austin Graham. “All of our players have been working hard this summer and are ready.”

Despite the young squad, the Comets’ goals remain consistent and competitive.

“Our goal every season is to win more games than we lose and try to advance further in the playoffs than the year before,” Graham said.

The Comets are preparing to face a challenging district once again, with perennial powerhouse Adair — a state qualifier last year — returning strong, and Dewey dropping down from 4A to increase the competition.

“Our district will be tough like always,” Graham said. “We’ll have our hands full with both of those.”

But Graham isn’t focused on what the competition brings, he’s focused on what his girls can control: Effort, development, and chemistry. Fans can expect to see a hardworking, athletic group take the field every game. Read the full story in today's Delaware County Journal.

The 2025 softball season is shaping up to be a fresh chapter for the Lady Hornets, built on a foundation of accountability, energy, and a wave of young talent ready to rise. With just four upperclassmen and an impressive freshman class, Head Coach Kevin Shawver says this group’s identity is being shaped around hard work — mentally and physically.

The Lady Hornets will lean on their speed and athleticism this year, as well as a handful of returning upperclassmen who’ve helped set the tone over the summer. Seniors Kelli McGarrah, Sabrah Haggard, and Jay Miller have had a solid offseason, while junior Brooklyn Spencer — the team’s leading returning starter — is already showing signs of an even bigger year.

Backing them up is a core group of sophomores — Tenley Worsham, Bella Hopper, Hadlee Deason, Lacie Boldra, and newcomer Nash’e Downing — all of whom will play key roles in the Hornets’ development and depth. Read the full story in today's Delaware County Journal.

It is football time in Oklahoma and the Jay Bulldogs are ready to take the gridiron. New head coach Travis East will take over the program, as former head coach and athletic director Eddie Barnwell enters retirement. East was previously at Verdigris High School for nine seasons where he went 58-44, with his teams only missing the playoffs three times. He brings much success and knowledge to an upper classman-heavy team.

Jay went 4-7 last season, going 4-3 in district play. They were able to make it to the playoffs where they faced 3A’s top-ranked and eventual state champions, the Lincoln Christian Bulldogs. Read the full season preview in tomorrow's Delaware County Journal.
