During Mental Health Awareness Month, INTEGRIS Health encourages Oklahomans to recognize the strong connection between mental health conditions and substance use disorders, while emphasizing that recovery is possible with compassionate, integrated care.

Mental health and substance use disorder frequently occur together, often referred to as co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis. Experts say untreated mental health conditions can increase the risk of substance misuse as individuals attempt to self-medicate symptoms.

Likewise, substance use can worsen existing mental health conditions and create barriers to treatment and recovery. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

Often considered the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day kicked off a season of outdoor grilling and entertaining. But with the increase in grilling comes more home grilling fires. In fact, the latest data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that July is the peak month for home grilling fires, followed by June, May, and August.

“Outdoor grilling is a popular way to cook during the warmer months, but it does present the risk of fire and burns,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “We want to help ensure that the grilling season remains a safe one for everybody.”

Between 2020 and 2024, U.S. fire departments responded to an annual average of 12,141 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues, including 6,110 structure fires and 6,031 outside or unclassified fires. These fires caused 15 civilian deaths, 171 reported civilian injuries, and $241 million in direct property damage; almost all the losses resulted from the structure fires. The Delaware County Election Board offers special services to military and overseas voters, along with their spouses and dependents, making it easier for them to vote. All eligible applicants must complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) in order to access benefits.

“We encourage applicants to complete the Federal Post Card Application, which is available through the government Federal Voting Assistance Program,” Delaware County Election Board Secretary Crystal January said. “The application serves as both a voter registration application and an absentee ballot application.”

The federal absentee ballot application is valid through two consecutive federal, general elections and must be renewed on or before the expiration date. It is recommended that military and overseas voters, along with their eligible family members, review their registration at least once a year to ensure their registration and absentee ballot application are current.

Military personnel and their families should contact the Voting Services Officer in their unit for information. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

Senate Bill 504 by Sen. Warren Hamilton (R-McCurtain) became law this month, officially outlawing marriage in Oklahoma before the age of 18. The measure removes existing exceptions that allowed minors to marry with parental consent or court authorization.

SB 504 was carried in the House of Representatives by Rep. Nicole Miller (R-Edmond). Unlike the Senate, where the measure received unanimous support, the bill narrowly passed the House. A Republican-led debate resulted in a 51-36 final vote in the chamber, enough to secure passage and send the bill to the governor’s desk by just a single vote.

Opponents of bill cited concerns of government overreach. All 36 “no” votes came from Republican representatives who criticized the bill’s lack of exceptions. Some of the lawmakers argued that the legal age of 18 was arbitrary, and not equivocal to an individual’s maturity or ability to make decisions about marriage.

The provisions of SB 504 will officially take effect Nov. 1. Once effective, Oklahoma will become the 17th state that has permanently outlawed underage marriage. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

Reid Newspapers’ second round of political polling focused on State Question 832, the minimum wage proposal. State Question 832 proposes increasing Oklahoma’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 through $1.50 increments from 2025 to 2029, followed by continual increases tied to the U.S. Department of Labor’s cost-of-living index.

Data collected state-wide from respondents through Reid Surveys shows a definitive lean toward YES. Results are as follows: YES (56%), NO (36%), and Undecided (8%).

Opponents of State Question 832 include every Republican candidate currently running for governor in Oklahoma. Gentner Drummond, Chip Keating, Charles McCall, Mike Mazzei, and Jake Merrick all oppose State Question 832. Despite this, YES still appears to be the preferred outcome in our polling.
