As the summer gardening season ends, brightly-colored flowers are fading, as if saying goodbye. While the vibrancy of a summer garden slips quietly away, gardeners can prepare for next spring’s vivid colors in the landscape by planting spring-flowering bulbs now through early November.

David Hillock, Oklahoma State University Extension consumer horticulturist, said planting bulbs in the fall gives them time to establish a root system before the winter cold sets in. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

Senior Director of Resource Development Chase Mowery, Chief Financial and Resource Development Officer Carla Meyer, and Chief Community Impact Officer Annie Mitchell explained their expansion plans.

Mowery said the organization is expanding to Mayes and Delaware Counties. They are planning for fiscal year 2027. He said the nonprofit is beginning their second century of service. Last week, partisan disagreements careened into a brick-wall deadline, and unable to pass a budget, the federal government once again shut down. Compared to most of the country, northeast Oklahoma is unique regarding intergovernmental operations, with the large number of Native American tribes located in Ottawa and Delaware Counties.

Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation Chuck Hoskin Jr. said the Nation is prepared for the immediate impacts of the shutdown. Cherokee Nation is the most populous tribe in northeast Oklahoma, and the second-largest federally-recognized Native American tribe in the United States by population.

“We’re hopeful that Congress’s foresight to provide an advance appropriation for the Indian Health Service will prevent any severe disruptions as experienced during the 2013 and 2018 shutdowns,” said Chief Hoskin. “I urge both sides of the aisle to work on a path forward and reopen the government as soon as possible and call on the administration to honor the government’s Treaty and Trust responsibilities, avoid needless cuts to Tribal programs and personnel, and use its authorities to minimize harm to tribes and tribal citizens.”

The Jay Bulldogs travelled down to Claremore to face off against the Sequoyah Eagles on Friday night. The week before, Jay got a homecoming win against Head Coach Travis East’s former school, winning that contest 12-9. This game, they handled business and improved to 2-0 in district play by defeating the Eagles 36-17.

It was a rough start for the Bulldogs, as they fumbled the ball to Sequoyah, who turned that drive into three points. Eventually, Jay’s defense got a safety making the score 3-2. Sequoyah then put together a drive that ended in a touchdown, and the extra point was good, making the score 10-2 in favor of the Eagles.

At the 3:45 mark of the second quarter, Jay’s Mondo Newcomb got the Bulldogs rolling with a 41-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead heading into the half with the Eagles leading the Bulldogs 10-8. The second half was all Bulldogs. Offensively and defensively, they were on point, ultimately winning with a final score 36-17.

Jay is now 2-0 in district play. This week, Oct. 10, they play at home against the team from Berryhill, who are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district play, losing this last week to Inola 24-17. Youth Night activities start at 6:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Read the full story in tomorrow's Delaware County Journal.
