Grundy Center has had at least one weekly newspaper since 1868. The first was called The Grundy County Atlas. Another, The New Century, was founded in 1876. The Grundy Register was formed in 1923 from a merger of those two publications.
The Grundy Register in 1923 was owned by John Vanderwicken and R.R. Clark. After World War II, each of the owners brought their sons into the business, LeRoy Vanderwicken and Jack Clark.
In 1961, Troy Anderson purchased half of the company from the Clarks. In 1978 Ralph and Marlene Kothenbeutel purchased half of the company from LeRoy Vanderwicken. The Kothenbuetels bought out Anderson in 1991. Mid-America Publishing Corporation purchased The Grundy Register from the Kothenbeutels August 1, 1998.
