Tomorrow marks the final issue of the Grygla Eagle Newspaper. And for this emotional farewell, a beloved voice returns.

Joy Nordby is back…20 years later…with one last “Letter From Home.” Her words don’t just reflect on the past, they transport you there. Back to the days when small-town life filled every page. When the newspaper was more than just ink and paper, but rather the heartbeat of the community.

Joy’s letter captures the spirit of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s perfectly. It’s warm, it’s real and it’s everything we loved about the era when newspapers truly thrived.

You’ll be able to read this IN PRINT on Thursday (as we are one day late due to the holiday) and HERE on this page Friday, before the Grygla Eagle officially signs off.

📸: Just one of the many WILD things Joy would do for a picture!

CALL FOR PHOTOS: Help me choose the cover of my upcoming book

I'm currently working on the cover design for my new book, The Things They Carried Home, a deeply personal project that shares the powerful stories of over 20 local veterans. The book also features some incredible photographs that help bring their experiences to life.

Right now, I’m searching for the perfect photo of a local veteran to grace the cover. I’m looking for an image that carries a certain feel…something honest, powerful, a look in their eyes, a moment forever captured.

If you have a photo of a veteran in your life that you believe captures something truly special, I would love to see it and consider it for the cover of my upcoming book.

Please call or text Kari at 218-689-6901

Along the Grygla Go-Getters stretch of highway, or ANY highway!
✅🍀✅
We’ve got a great group of 4-H kids out on the highway tonight doing one of their many volunteer projects! Which is cleaning up trash that shouldn’t be there in the first place. 🙂
Thank you to all of our local ditch cleaners that are busy this time of year.
You are appreciated.

ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.......❕

This page will be going dark as I get ready to re-launch it as The Northern Neighbor coming June 16th!

It’ll be a fresh, fully digital newsstand for community happenings, local stories and a strong focus on advertising that truly highlights the businesses and organizations that keep our towns running.

Think hometown news, but built for how we live and connect now.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support I’ve already received from local advertisers. You’ve shown up behind-the-scenes for this new venture, and I’m so thankful. If you haven’t jumped on board yet, you've still got time. I’d love to chat about how we can showcase your business or organization in a creative, meaningful way.

You can reach me at 218-689-6901 or by email at [email protected].

Coming this August: A collection of local veterans' stories

Local writer and editor Kari Sundberg is proud to announce the upcoming release of her debut book, The Things They Carried Home: Voices of Service & Sacrifice from Our Local Veterans.
The book will be available at the 2025 Grygla Fall Festival, held the last weekend in August.
This creative nonfiction collection features the powerful, personal stories of more than 20 veterans from the community. Spanning over 13 years of interviews and writing, the book captures firsthand accounts from the front lines, paired with personal photographs that honor the individuality and sacrifice of each veteran.
“This project is really personal,” says Kari. “Each story has been written with care and emotional depth, blending journalism with storytelling to preserve our local history in a meaningful way.”
Copies of The Things They Carried Home will be available for purchase at the Grygla Fall Fest. Pre-orders will also be open soon for anyone who’d like a copy shipped later this summer. Veterans featured in the book will receive a complimentary copy.
“I look forward to sharing these stories with our community,” Kari adds. “My hope is that the book serves as a heartfelt tribute to the courage, strength and personal stories of the veterans who shared their experiences…and a reminder that some of the most meaningful stories come from right here in our own community.”
Stay tuned for more details and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks leading up to the release.
As a reminder, starting mid-June, all news and community-related items will be shared on The Northern Neighbor page and YouTube channel. Be sure to follow along.

Yesterday, we celebrated Mrs. Lois Anderson, a phenomenal teacher who has been changing lives for 33 years at Goodridge Public School. When the school year ends this year, school's out forever for Mrs. Anderson! Mrs. Anderson will certainly leave a void here at the Goodridge School, as she has impacted so many students, staff, and the community. We wish her all the best!

A DIFFICULT GOODBYE FROM YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER
Written by Kari Sundberg, Grygla Eagle Editor

To our readers, advertisers and supporters,

After months of thoughtful conversation, difficult number-crunching and heartfelt discussions, we’ve come to a decision that was very difficult to make. Richard’s Publishing will be closing its four newspapers - the Leader Record, Grygla Eagle, Red Lake County Herald and the McIntosh Times.

This was not a decision made lightly. Like so many small, hometown newspapers across the country, we’ve faced growing financial challenges over the past several years. Advertising dollars, which have always been the backbone of keeping a paper alive, have declined significantly in today’s digital age. While we explored all possible avenues, including the idea of going fully digital to cut printing and postage costs, the numbers simply couldn’t support the path forward.

In 2024 alone, the combined revenue for all four of our newspapers totaled less than our expenses. These numbers include everything from printing and postage (over $80,000 combined per year) to payroll and office rent, and the many everyday costs of doing business to keep the newspapers going.

Having the newspapers and starting the Grygla Eagle again in 1973 has meant a lot to the Richards. And what a legacy they’ve built.

Richard’s Publishing was founded by Dick and Corrine back in August of 1972. For more than 50 years, they’ve poured their hearts into this work…not just running newspapers but operating a successful print shop out of Gonvick that continues to thrive today and will continue to remain open. Even now, in their early 80s, they remain actively involved every single day. But as they shared with us during our recent meeting in Gonvick, joined by newspaper editors Kari Sundberg, Grygla Eagle, Bonny Cote, Red Lake County Herald, and Kim Spaeth, McIntosh Times, they want to step away from the newspaper side of the business while they still can, while the choice is still theirs to make. And we fully support that.

Yes, emotions ran high. Yes, this feels heavy. But it is not a failure. It’s the closing of a remarkable, successful chapter. For over five decades, these papers have been a trusted voice in our communities, covering everything from town festivals and meetings to high school sports, community events, hometown heroes, elections and everything in between. We’ve celebrated milestones, mourned losses and told the stories that make our small towns so special.

We are deeply grateful to the many businesses, organizations and individuals who have continued to support us, both through the years and especially now. Your ads, your subscriptions, your encouragement...they have never gone unnoticed.

The four newspapers will continue through the end of May and then they will come to an end.

While this is a goodbye to the newspapers, it’s not a goodbye to the community. The print shop will continue on, and Dick and Corrine will still be around…likely with ink on their hands and a story or two to tell.

With every ending also comes the possibility of a new beginning. Kari Sundberg, editor of the Grygla Eagle, is venturing out on her own, providing a 100% digital news source with a strong community & advertising focus. Her plans are underway to launch her new digital platform mid-June, delivering real-time, local happenings and advertising, operating under the name The Northern Neighbor. Watch for more information to come on that next week.

Bonny Cote, who long ran the Oklee Herald, came out of retirement to help keep her local paper going. Though she’s saddened to see it come to an end after so many years, she’s also grateful for the time she’s had to connect with her community, knowing the impact the paper has had.

Kim Spaeth, with the McIntosh Times, has also been a steady presence in her town and has always believed in the value of a community newspaper and the role it plays in keeping people informed and connected. While this decision is not an easy one, she stands behind it, understanding the realities we all face in these changing times. Like all of us, Kim remains focused on ending this journey with respect and gratitude for the readers who have supported us all along.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for believing in local news. And thank you for allowing us to be part of your stories.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Dick and Corrine Richards, Gonvick
Kari Sundberg, Grygla
Bonny Cote, Oklee
Kim Spaeth, McIntosh
