Warning: New Phone Scam

A local resident fell victim to a convincing phone scam yesterday, and we want readers to be on high alert.

The caller ID showed “US Bank” and the scammer knew the man’s real US Bank credit card balance, last payment date and amount, making the call sound completely legitimate. Claiming to be from the credit card company, the caller said there was fraudulent activity on the account and asked for the card’s expiration date and other financial details.

The scammer then claimed the man’s phone had been hacked and instructed him to dial *72. This activated call forwarding, giving the scammer control of the line. Verizon later helped the victim deactivate the forwarding by dialing *73.

Despite the man’s quick action to then cancel his credit and debit cards, the scammer had already attempted to access his bank account in that short amount of time.

Stay alert and protect yourself:
• Ask the caller to verify their identity first. A legitimate company will never hesitate to do so.
• Hang up and call the official customer service number on your card or bank statement.
• Be cautious of any “urgent” requests or instructions to dial unfamiliar codes.
• Report suspicious calls to your bank and phone provider right away.

Scammers are getting smarter every day. Stay alert, double-check everything and never give sensitive information over the phone unless you initiate the call with the official customer service number on the back of your card.

GG Chargers vs. Northern Freeze in Newfolden
Friday, October 10th

The Chargers came ready to play last night, rolling past Northern Freeze with a 36-0 shutout on a crisp fall evening in Newfolden.

Coach's comments:
"As with all football games, the game is won in the trenches. Hats off to the line play of the Chargers in this victory. Great game by Brett Rychlock with a qb sack & a fumble recovery, and 9 tackles. Sebastian Groven led the Chargers defense with 13 tackles.
But, this will be short lived with the Chargers ending their regular season next week vs. the high-powered offense of the BGMR Gators."

The Chargers wrapped up their home season last night in Goodridge, hosting the Red Lake Falls Eagles for Parent’s Night and Senior Night. Three seniors were recognized: players Makayla Erlandson and Nevaeh Kotrba, along with team manager Yasmin Filgueiras.

The Eagles came out strong, taking the match in three sets (12-25, 10-25, 17-25).

The Grygla Merchants are firing up the grill next Wednesday evening, Oct. 15th, in the Ralph Klein Memorial Park in Grygla!

Join them at their free tailgate party with brats, hotdogs, chips and lemonade before the Chargers take on BGMR.

Serving begins at 5pm and will go until the 6pm kickoff against the Gators.

The GG Chargers hit the road once again Tuesday night, traveling to Oklee to take on the RLCC Mustangs. The Chargers battled hard and came out on top in four sets, earning a 3-1 victory and improving their season record to 9-11. (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20)
