Vintage Queen Cutlery steel, curly maple, 15 pieces of wood, blue skateboard liners, and absolutely no adult supervision. What could possibly go wrong?!

Well, apparently another axe wedge that required far more effort than any reasonable person would put into it. Lol.

This one started with a beautiful old Queen Cutlery axe head paired with a gorgeous curly maple handle. That combination alone was enough to make me happy, but you know how things go around here. I just couldn’t leave well enough alone.

So, let’s make a wedge!

15 individually cut pieces of wood, some blue skateboard liners, a generous helping of Titebond II, and a whole lot of questionable decision-making.

Glue it up, clamp it together, let it dry, and head to the grinder to turn that little block of chaos into something that actually resembles an axe wedge.

Then comes my favorite part. Driving that wedge home and watching all those little blue stripes come together inside the eye of a piece of vintage American steel.

And paired with that curly maple? Oh, she’s a looker!

A little cleanup, some finishing work, and another old axe gets a new lease on life.

I could’ve used a plain wooden wedge. Would’ve been quicker, easier, and probably a whole lot more sensible.

But where’s the fun in that?!

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make me smile the biggest.

And before anyone asks, this one’s NOT FOR SALE! She’s staying right here with me. Every once in a while, I think I deserve to keep one of my own creations. Lol.

Apparently Travis over at Forceable Cure hasn’t had enough of me making axe handles! Lol!

Well, sorry brother, because HERE WE GO AGAIN!

This time we’re working on another Council Tool USA 250 axe! But this one’s a little different. It’s the special edition Scout Hatchet, complete with all those beautiful commemorative etchings.

Of course, I couldn’t just leave it alone.

I started looking through handles, changed my mind about 37 times, and finally landed on a Wh***ey River Trading 12HC, A-grade hickory.

And HOLY CRAP, look at the grain on that thing!

I’ve got something special planned for this one, but I’m keeping that part to myself for now.

And to make this project even better, my good friend Joel over at Burr and Bevel is making the wedge! Two craftsmen putting their own touch on one special little axe.

If you thought the last USA 250 axe project was a little over the top, well, apparently I haven’t learned a damn thing!

There’s a whole lot going on in the RedBeard shop right now, and apparently I have absolutely no adult supervision!

First up, check out this WENGE handle! It’s covered in dust right now, but even through all that mess, this thing is an absolute stunner. Just wait until the finish hits it!

Next up is a hickory handle for a small saddle axe, similar to a Norlund. This one’s available if anybody’s interested. The other handles I’m working on are commissions.

And speaking of saddle axes, I’ve got another head on the bench getting ready for its new handle. That one’s gonna be pretty freaking sick!

Oh, and did I mention the pile of Buckleys sitting over there? Yep. There’s a whole lot happening around here!

A little sanding, a little fitting, a whole lot of chaos, and apparently no end in sight.

Another handle oiling video? Yep. But this one’s pretty freaking special!

I’ve been working on a saddle axe project, and while the head isn’t ready yet, I couldn’t wait to show you guys this handle.

Curly maple, quilted maple, bearded curl, whatever you want to call it. I call it freaking gorgeous!

I sanded the absolute crap out of this thing, and when that first coat of boiled linseed oil hit the wood, HOLY CRAP! All that figure came to life!

I’m calling this one BEARDED CURL, and I think you’ll understand why. Look at how that grain flows!

Some folks might argue that figured maple isn’t the best choice for an axe handle, but damn if it doesn’t make for a beautiful one.

She’s still thirsty, so there’s plenty more oiling to do. And we’ve still got a saddle axe head to finish!

What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or is this thing pretty freaking badass?

Let’s see if we can bring the curl out of this beautiful bearded curly maple axe handle!

Started by sanding it all the way to 1000 grit. Then came the aqua fortis. One coat, then another, because apparently I have a problem leaving well enough alone.

After drying, I gave it a good rubdown with steel wool, and that beautiful curl started showing itself.

But then came my favorite part.

BOILED LINSEED OIL!

And just like that, all those hopes, dreams, and questionable decisions came to life!

Good Lord, would you look at that grain!

Sometimes the wood just needs a little encouragement to show off.

The calm before the CHAOS.

There’s been a whole lot happening behind the scenes lately. Some things you’ve seen. Some things you haven’t. And some things you don’t even know to be looking for.

I’ve been keeping a few cards pretty damn close to my chest, and believe me, that’s been harder than you might think. Lol.

There’s a reason things have been a little quiet in certain corners of the shop.

Pieces are falling into place. Plans are coming together. And the best part?

You haven’t seen a damn thing yet.
