On a cold Tuesday morning, students at Gulfport Montessori Elementary School gathered in their garden. Without a single weather-based complaint, the students eagerly dug in the soil, hunted for bugs, planted seedlings, and tried new foods. 🪴🪱🥬

Through the guidance of “Garden Teachers” Miss Niki and Miss Katie, dozens of edible plants spanning fruits, veggies, herbs, and flowers are sprouting, blooming, and flourishing in this living classroom. 🥕🍅🥒

Niki Bigda is the Garden Supervisor and Katie Ruhl is a Garden Educator for the Edible Peace Patch Project, a nonprofit maintaining educational gardens in eight Title 1 elementary schools around Pinellas County.🌱

Now a subsidiary of R’Club Child Care, Inc., the Edible Peace Patch Project was formed in 2009 when a group of Eckerd College students installed a prototype schoolyard garden at Lakewood Elementary School.

Winter in Florida may not mean snowstorms and ski pants but we do break out our sweaters and space heaters for those chilly December nights. Instead of salted roads, we salt our rims here in the tropics. And a cozy drink can make even the coolest nights feel warm and festive.

Whether you’re curled up on the lanai, gathering around a backyard fire pit, or pretending your patio heater is a mountain lodge, these warm, tropical-inspired sips bring the comfort — no snow boots required.

Learn how to make Citrus-Spiced Mulled Wine, Coconut Hot Buttered Rum, and Warm Honey Bourbon Lemonade.

November is a month of holidays, including Veteran’s Day, making it a wonderful time to reveal research into the haunting of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 39. SPIRITS of St. Petersburg, a paranormal investigative group, checked out this place.

Years ago, a woman who worked for the VFW Post 39 came to a SPIRITS event and described paranormal phenomena in the building.

However, one of the best sources of information is Chris Shineman, who served in the Army and is working on a graduate degree in World War II studies. He is also the canteen manager who spends many hours in the building, and he has had many unusual experiences there.

One time, he tried to turn off the TV after hours. He tossed the remote into a bin and continued closing when the TV came on again. He turned it off; it turned back on.

Finally, he turned it off again and said, “OK, if you’re going to turn it on, at least find something entertaining.” He left to put the trash out and when he returned not only was the TV on, it had been turned from "AUX" to "cable."

“You have to push a switch to do that,” Shineman noted.

We grow up watching superheroes with capes and dramatic rescues. Real heroes work without theme music or scripted glory. They ride in fire engines, patrol cars, and rescue boats. On Oct. 12, Madeira Beach firefighters proved what everyday heroism looks like.

Madeira Beach Fire Department's Kavaris Service, Johana Whitfield, Lt. George Hill, Erick Ubiles, and Joey Calderaro received awards for a heroic water rescue.

Neptune Grill's new mural, painted by Gulfport artist Kiersten Long, pays homage to owner Dia Vartsakis’ Greek heritage. 🎨🇬🇷

Vartsakis had a specific vision for the mural, Long said, a trait she appreciates from clients.

“I was really honored, because I know there's a ton of muralists, but (Vartsakis) really wanted to go local and get a Gulfport artist,” Long said. “I think it is amazing to sort of give back, because our community was hit.”

Eight years ago, Jax Taylor offered 25 free Thanksgiving meals through her Gulfport café, Jax In And Out. This year, she plans to prepare at least 168 meals. Each meal includes turkey, stuffing, real mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, homemade rolls, and homemade pumpkin bread with caramel sauce.

“We give them out the day before Thanksgiving,” she said. “We sort the donations, put them into boxes and deliver them.”

This year, Gulfport Boomerangs, a long-standing softball league, donated $250 worth of food to Jax In and Out to prepare and distribute for the holiday.

“We started asking for contributions for Jax In and Out so she could prepare those holiday meals," Sumner said. "We have raised over $300 in cash, and we’re still collecting.”
