Where do sociologists work (that isn’t academia)? Government & Public Policy. 🏛️

Sociologists bring an understanding of people, institutions, communities, and social change to some of the biggest challenges facing the public sector.

From shaping public policy and supporting community development to preparing communities for disasters, analyzing population change, and assessing the social impacts of public decisions, sociological skills have a valuable place in government at the local, state, and federal levels.

And sociologists don’t just study government and policy—they actually work within these systems to help shape them.

Patients are often encouraged to research their symptoms, ask the right questions, and advocate for themselves. But what happens when they do all of that and still can’t access the care they need?

In “What Is Cultural Health Capital? (And Why It Matters),” Dr. Stephanie Wilson explores the knowledge and skills people use to navigate healthcare in the U.S. while emphasizing an important limitation: those skills only help when patients also have the time, money, coverage, and access needed to follow through.

Can mindfulness improve our well-being? Absolutely. But can it solve social problems on its own?

During her sabbatical with Applied Worldwide, sociologist Dr. Brenda Wilhelm explored that question through a three-part blog series examining mindfulness from a sociological perspective.

In Part 2, Sociological Critiques of Mindfulness, Dr. Wilhelm considers what happens when structural problems are reframed as individual ones. While mindfulness can be a valuable tool for coping, she argues that lasting solutions to public issues require us to examine the social, political, and economic systems that shape our lives.

This series isn't a critique of mindfulness itself, but rather an invitation to think more deeply about where personal improvement ends and social change begins.
