Hello Dharma center friends!

We are planning on holding space in person tonight, but we wanted to give you a heads up that our son has had most likely the flu since Saturday. We did give him a Covid test and it was negative. He is on the tail end of it and feeling mostly better. Dusty and I both have our flu vaccinations this season and seem to be doing fine. If you are at all worried please feel free to stay at home. John is not available for a live talk tonight and we were planning on leading a meditation ourselves and showing a talk we watch in our 8 week classes by Lama Alan Wallace from Center for Contemplative Research in Crestone. I will put a link to the talk below and if you choose to stay home maybe you will have a chance to watch it.

Please know you are welcome if you’d like to come in person, and my son hasn’t been in the Dharma center side of the house. We have been running an industrial air purifier for days as well.

We hope to resume our normal in-person meditation and talk with John being live on Zoom next week and will continue until our spring break week on March 19th. On March 19th we will take a break from in-person at the Here and Now Center, but John will still be available on Zoom to watch at your house.

You can meditate sitting in a chair or on a cushion on the floor and really in any comfortable position that affords you a straight back that you won't easily fall asleep in. It is important to be comfortable and relaxed but also to be able to remain alert. If you've found making meditation a regular practice challenging, let us help out!

Our "Spring" 8 week meditation and Mindfulness Foundations course is going great! If you are interested in the next one which will start in the fall or around August, please check in here or sign up on our email list on our website. www.hereandnowcenter.com

Consider a sporting event like the Olympics. We can see how those athletes train; their whole lives are totally dedicated to their sport. It regulates them -- when they get up, when they go to sleep, their diet, their exercise, even their relationships. They will give up anything and everything for the sake of winning a little medal. And yet, if people who think that they want to get enlightened are asked if they could manage to get up half an hour earlier in the morning to meditate, they say it is too difficult! The greatest prize in the world is freedom of mind. And yet, how little we are prepared to give in order to attain that greatest of all goals.

Even if we win an Olympic medal, it would only bring a few days of glory. After that, what then ? What do we do next? But complete freedom of mind is forever. When we ourselves see clearly, when we ourselves know, if we can tame our own untamed minds, then we will be able to benefit others. Well, we’d all like that, but not with too much effort! We are all waiting for the perfect guru to turn up and just say the perfect word, click his fingers and we instantly get enlightened without any effort!

Therefore we have to open ourselves to a real commitment to the spiritual path. We are putting the spiritual path at the centre of our life and not at the periphery, and so we undertake to keep the basic general ethical principles and try to incorporate as many as possible of the spiritual practices into our life. That’s what taking refuge is about. - Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo
