Please check out Darton Archery if you haven’t already! The new Sequel 33 ST arrived last week. After a little easy tuning, fletching arrows and tinkering with sights, the results are as follows. First group was @ 20 yards. The second was @ 40 yards. Tight groups from a bow that shoots as smooth as glass.

Here is a wonderful example of why we often choose to use lighter equipment to maintain existing fire breaks, over larger equipment like a dozer. These breaks were swept out using a skid steer and a 6-way blade. Notice the minimal topsoil removal? Using alternative methods are often more desirable with better results.

Here is a hardwood select cut area in west central AL. It was a closed canopy system dominated by swamp chestnut oak, cherry bark oak, water oak, willow oak, s**g bark hickory and sweetgum. Most of the sweetgum are being removed, and select trees from the desirable species are being removed, to promote crown expansion and more herbaceous growth. This harvest strategy will provide several times more browse and bedding cover, while maintaining high acorn production.

Today we completed another understory burn for woody stem control. By burning this late in the growing season we should get better control of woody stems with less stump sprouting, and more sunlight to the ground. I flushed a covey of quail while burning, so that’s encouraging. They should get much benefit from the post-fire landscape. , ,
