Long, hot, summer day playing in the mountains of northeast AL. Saw these two beauties while marking a little timber.

My nephew Colbe Eidson almost stepped on both (within inches of the darker one)! Neither offered to rattle or strike. We went on our way and they kept doing their thing.

While many are terrified of these beautiful animals, they are an important part of our ecosystem and should be allowed to play their part!

Ok folks, it’s obviously fawning season. This fawn was running down the road as we turned the corner. I’m assuming the doe heard us and ducked into the woods.

You can see the fawn finally notices us and first lowers itself and then lays flat as possible in an effort to hide. We carried on about our way and let it be. The doe wasn’t far, we could barely hear her walking in thick brush.

Moral of the story, don’t remove fawns from the wild. There are very, very few cases where humans should interact with a wild fawn.

Even without an open canopy, some hardwood systems produce many vines, woody sprouts and shrubs that are moderate to high preference for white-tailed deer. Here’s one example of such with several species of desmodium, lespedeza, smilax, muscadine and jessamine. I’d prefer a more open canopy, but fire did remove many of the lower midstory stems and paved the way for ground cover to expand.

This is one of our Greene Co, AL prairie restoration sites one growing season after cedar removal. The ground disturbance from equipment exposed seeds, along with full sunlight, to completely transform the plant community. A bobwhite quail was heard today for the first time in over a decade.
