We are deeply saddened to report the passing of a beloved member of our radio family. Mr. Ollin Bruce Underwood passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6th, at the age of 87. Bruce Underwood was a cherished voice on the airwaves and a cornerstone of the WTWX radio family for many, many years. Generations of listeners across Northeast Alabama began their day by waking up to Bruce on The Wake-Up Show – a program that became a daily tradition in countless homes.
Bruce began his remarkable career with Guntersville Broadcasting Company, Inc., in October of 1958, when he joined the staff of WGSV Radio. Over the decades, Bruce wore many hats – morning show host, local news reporter, advertising representative, interviewer, and sports broadcaster. His Let’s Go Fishing show featured interviews with local Lake Guntersville anglers and his spirited play-by-play coverage of the Guntersville High School Wildcats – alongside the eventual Voice of The Wildcats, Bill Yancy – are fondly remembered by many listeners.
Later, Bruce became the voice of mornings on WTWX 95.9, where listeners tuned in to hear the crow of the wake-up rooster, Roho, and stayed for the weather, the news, sports, the music and Bruce’s comments about various topics – delivered in Bruce’s warm, familiar voice.

Bruce Underwood was more than a broadcaster – he was a friend to the community, a trusted presence on the radio, and a man whose passion for local radio never wavered. Guntersville Broadcasting Co., Inc., its staff and management, extend sincere condolences to his son, Mike, his daughter, Kim, and to the entire Underwood family.

District 7 - Dr. Pete Sparks, Randy Whitaker (I)
(I) indicates the incumbent.
Sanchez Watkins will win a new term in District 1 without an opponent. So will John Myers in District 3 and Rudy Cornelius in District 6.
The city election is August 26.
