Update on Bloomfield Section 8 Housing Waitlist
The Township of Bloomfield recently opened the pre-application process for our Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. We accepted the first 100 pre-applications through PHA Web, the database platform used by many Section 8 agencies.
From these 100 pre-applications, a computerized lottery will select 75 applicants to be placed on the official waitlist.
Section 8 housing vouchers are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Township administers the program locally, but the number of vouchers we can offer depends entirely on the level of funding allocated to us.
Information about this opening was widely advertised in advance and posted prominently on the Townshipβs website. Residents seeking assistance with the application were supported by staff who helped submit their materials. Our IT Department placed the application link on the front page of the Township website, and it went live at 8:30 a.m. The 100 available pre-application slots were filled by 8:33 a.m., at which point the system automatically closed.
Bloomfield last opened its Section 8 waitlist in 2022. In the past, openings occurred roughly every 10 years. By opening the list more frequently, even for smaller groups, we aim to manage expectations realistically and avoid leaving residents on the waitlist for extended periods without movement.
We understand the high demand for affordable housing and appreciate the communityβs patience and understanding as we work within federal funding limits to serve as many residents as possible.
