This is a hard one, even considering that I’ve not actively listened to anything Ace has made after the Frehley’s Comet stuff from the mid 80s. I know music tastes change, and mine sure did, but the fact is, I never would’ve picked up guitar if not for him. I speak for millions when I say this. People can say what they want about KISS, but there was a time when they made great, loose limbed rock ‘n’ roll records, and Ace was a big reason why. He was the rock star. I know a lot of this is nostalgia, and a big part of our childhood is dying along with him, and many from that era. I still listen to KISS from time to time, but prefer ‘73-‘81, because of Ace, of course.
So many Halloweens. So many concerts. So many stoned out jam sessions with friends in their parents garages. He was everybody’s favorite.
74 still feels too young. Ace always had an issue with his balance, and it was always a source of humour. To have died as a result of a brain bleed brought on from a fall in his home seems cruel.
So few can hope to do something in this world that will last for generations to come, and, like it or not, Ace Frehley and KISS will be around for a very long time. Rest in peace Space Ace.

I've been nominated in the Producer of the Year category in the 2025 New England Music Awards, and I am honored, regardless of what i’m about to say. I've been up for this six times over the years, and "losing" hasn't changed my life a single bit. The truth is, these awards are baseless. Now, you might feel differently, and that's ok. The ONLY criteria for "winning" is the number of votes you can pull in, and NOT the work you put in. I’ve heard some of the "artists" who've “won”, who belong at an open mic night. They've got lots family and friends willing to vote for them multiple times. You know it, I know it, and they know it. Not only that, but they can simply have all of these people vote them onto the ballot, which is how they get there in the first place. It’s sadly that easy. Then they simply feign surprise. Still, there ARE plenty of legit artists and producers listed here. Many of them are good friends and clients of ours at DF. They work hard, gaining various levels of genuine “success” for their hard work. They also know that their lives won't change a bit having "won" or "lost".
Being named among some great peers, in the most honest way, year after year, DOES mean something to me, and if you’d like to vote, click the link in the comments section, and go for it.
Congrats to those nominated, but mostly to those that are out there doing the work day after day.

We got this vintage Yamaha CP-70 piano last week, and, thanks to our trusty piano tech Ryan Larson, it’s fully dialed in. These pianos have been on too many legendary songs to count, but l've included a few recognizable bits here for reference. They are as cool as the Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos, with a unique sound all their own. Thanks to our brother Nick for the hookup!
We can't wait to throw it on some records starting next week.

The Dirt Floor Story...

Walking into Eric Michael Lichter's Dirt Floor, in Haddam Connecticut, is what I imagine it must have been like to walk into The Band's Big Pink or Shangri La recording spaces in the early '70s. His vision is immediately clear: a home for creation — not a sterile facility. After years of traveling as a singer-songwriter, Eric started Dirt Floor in 2006 to help other artists avoid the same mediocre recording experiences he had gone through. His work as a producer and engineer has gained Dirt Floor a reputation for being one of the best music studios in the Northeast. Steve Wytas came on board in 2013, equipped with his own impeccable talents as a veteran recording engineer for mixing and mastering.
