African children were raised with stories that were told from generations to generations. In each story, there is a hidden message intended to teach the child many things such as: responsibility, humility, ambition, courage, respect, patience, singing and most importantly how to appreciate the African culture. Story telling was compliment of each evening before the children went to bed, or in cult
ural ceremonies; story telling was important to teach boys how to become men. Majaga Publishing House is the brainchild of Harr Freeya Njai, PhD; who is interested in bringing back “Laybone Loupane” in a written and illustrated form. This new form will bring the self-interest from the children and hence engage the parent. As a working parent herself, she has forgotten many of the stories her grandmother and mother told me her. Like Dr. Njai, many parent are in the same predicament, and they educate their children using imported European or American stories, especially Disney. Learning and appreciating a foreign culture in important in this global village BUT knowing and appreciating your own is equally important. In addition, Dr. Njai is interested in publishing novels from budding Gambian writers and encourage them to put their pen skills to the test. In Gambia; being a journalist or a writer is never the "creme de la creme" of careers YET writing skills is one thins you cannot do without. Majaga Publishing House will produce high standard illustrated children's books to compete at home and in the international market. The books will:
• Revive the “Laybone Loupane” culture in The Gambia and beyond
• Attract children to engage in reading
• Involve the parent to read to their children
• Attract young writers who want to publish original stories
• Attract Gambian artists to cultivate their skills
• Export and sell our colorful culture outside The Gambia
• Most importantly archive our cultural stories
MAJAGA PUBLISHING HOUSE will allow authors to submit original or traditional stories; selected stories chosen will be illustrated, packaged, printed, marketed and distributed by the company. In addition, the company will engage in reading sessions in collaboration with other players to make events for both the children and parents to enjoy.
