A majority of Half Moon Bay city council members on Tuesday night indicated they did not want to continue the city’s Flock automated license plate reader program once its contract with Flock Safety expires Oct. 28. Council members cited concerns about the company, data privacy and public trust in the technology.

‘We’re very lucky, and we know we’re lucky’: Montara family recounts house fire escape, community support

It’s been a week since the Cuellar family fled their burning Montara home in the middle of the night, sending Austin Cuellar to the hospital with burns. After six days in the hospital, the husband and father of two returned to his family Monday, and despite everything they have endured, the Cuellars say they can’t believe how lucky they are.

A structure fire that broke out shortly before midnight Tuesday along Grant Road in Montara displaced four residents and sent one person to a burn center with injuries. The three-story home remained standing Wednesday morning, but fire personnel considered it a total loss.

A San Mateo County Superior Court judge on Thursday sided against an effort to force Half Moon Bay and county election officials to include a ballot argument against Measure Q, the referendum over the planned senior farmworker housing project at 555 Kelly Ave., in voter materials after the city rejected the argument as late.

The measure asks voters whether to uphold the Half Moon Bay City Council’s approval of a ground lease and other agreements allowing city-owned land to be used for the planned 40-unit affordable housing project. A majority “yes” vote on Measure Q would uphold the City Council’s approval, while a majority “no” vote would overturn it.

The decision means voters will not see an argument against Measure Q in the voter information guide or the names of the measure’s opponents on the ballot. Let HMB Voters Decide Chairman Hal Bogner, who filed the lawsuit after the city rejected the group’s ballot argument, will also not get an opportunity to submit a rebuttal to the argument in favor of the measure.

Samuel Palomino, a longtime Seahorse Ranch foreman who answered a late-night call to help San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies wrangle a runaway bull on Aug. 18 on Highway 35, was honored Tuesday by the Half Moon Bay City Council and Sheriff’s Office for helping bring the dangerous encounter to a safe end.
