A late second quarter touchdown pass from Andreas Buttry to Braedon Godfread and an 80 yard kick off return for a touchdown by Jeremiah Ballan was the difference on Friday as the Sidney football team topped Wayne on the home field in Sidney, 21-16.

Jaramiah Ballan, left, the player of the game for Sidney, poses with Luke Ashton, an honored military veteran and sergeant for the Fremont County Sheriffs Office, and fellow Sidney senior Chase Wallace. Sidney honors a military veteran at every home game.

Tree of Lights—Final

Nancy Middaugh

The George C. Grape Community Hospital Auxiliary is thrilled with the response to their 2021 Tree of Lights campaign. There were 283 lights lit on the tree in front of the hospital in memory or in honor of loved ones this Christmas season. The glow from those lights will continue through the coming year as the Grape Hospital Auxiliary uses your donations to help fund their 2021 projects.
This is the final list of honorees from the 2021 Tree of Lights campaign.

Ramblin' with Fergie by John Ferguson

South Hamburg Blues

About once a week, First Wife Hallie and I take a ride down through the south end of the old burg and lament the fact that it sure ain’t what it used to be. Used to be two or three nice homes in every block of Argyle, Main, Park and Washington Streets, but the really nasty flood of 2019 took all of those away. Now it’s just empty houses, vacant lots and precious few businesses.

Prairie Doc Perspectives

Humanity in Medicine

By Joy Falkenburg, M.D.

What does it mean to practice humanity in medicine? The phrase is used as a tagline and in book titles. Humanity and compassion in medicine is touted as something to aspire to, a noble accomplishment. But in reality, the biomedical model of health, the business model for healthcare, is not set up to support it. Algorithms and best practices set forth by insurance companies and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid do not account for the time required to establish meaningful human interaction between patient and caregiver.

Q/A: Avoid Scams After Natural Disasters
Sen. Chuck Grassley

Q: How severe were the December storms in Iowa?

A: In our state’s 175-year history, Iowans are no strangers to natural disasters. For the better part of the year, Iowans managed recovery efforts from the derecho that swept across the state in August 2020. The National Weather Service identified last year’s wind storm as a progressive derecho.

Horse breeders can balance mare nutrition with new guide

Press Release
A new publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach helps horse breeders determine the dietary needs of their mares during gestation and lactation.
A mare’s gestation or pregnancy is approximately 340 days, or 11 months, according to Peggy Auwerda, associate professor in animal science and extension equine specialist at Iowa State University. The dietary needs change significantly during gestation and lactation and are critical to the health of the horse and its foal.
“Special attention must be given to the diet of the pregnant mare from conception to foaling,” said Auwerda. “This publication provides some background and definition as to what the gestating and lactating mare needs, and illustrates it with both tables and figures.”

From the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Low water levels along the Missouri River have prompted the closure of the Indian Cave State Park boat ramp in southeast Nebraska.

The park near Shubert has one concrete boat ramp offering access to the river. At this time, water levels are too low for safe use.

Daily water level fluctuations will occur, but low water conditions likely will continue through the winter.

Boat operators should use caution loading, unloading and navigating the river at other access points along the river.
