There's so much happening in the world right now. Where to focus our attention can be overwhelming.

This evening I'm thinking of a little community of around ten thousand people on the border of Israeli and Syria- Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights. It's been an Isrelaeli-occupied territory since 1967.

It's a unique place, where they grow plump cherries, famous apples, and olives among other delicious things. They even have a ski resort.

Dear friends of mine from my younger years live there. They are some of the most gentle, vivacious and energetically clear people I've ever known. I feel grateful to have been part of their lives and their culture for several years, although I regretfully did not wholeheartedly appreciate all of it until years later.

Their quiet community was going about their business a few days ago, when they were suddenly hit by a rocket. Some young ones were having fun playing soccer. The rocket hit the field, 12 kids died and 30 were injured. Countless others witnessed this and will be forever scarred. The community is rattled, heartbroken, and in shock. I'm saddened and scared for them that an all out war might ensue.

I'm sending out waves of love to anyone and everyone who is suffering at the hands of giant powers and unstoppable egos, especially my friends and their loved ones. And yet again, I'm holding love and hope in one hand and sadness and despair in the other. 🌊💙.

Our hearts are often sparked by the magic of life and the pain of life simultaneously. We're all walking around with hearts full of joy, inspiration, hope...and sadness, worry, despair. The duality of life is ever present. What we do with all this emotional soup is our very personal choice.

Malaysia: South China Sea inspiration, contrasted by deep sadness over the mistreatment of our Mama Earth, the giver of all of life. ✨🥹💜🌏🌊

Monsoon season💦💧. During rainstorms, when I was a wee little lass in the holler in West Virginia, my mom would make us fresh corncakes on the woodstove, then we'd settle in for story and nap time. I've been recreating a similar experience here when the rain comes, only I'm much older, and Mama ain't here to make me snacks! I love watching the storms roll in over the big buildings outside our apartment. The sky goes dark, the wind picks up, I make a cup of tea, work on papers for the classes I'm taking, and sometimes I even sneak in a little nap.😴

Each encounter with an offering or a Spirit House invites a pause, even if it’s just an inner pause. And at every pause, sparks of awe and appreciation are ignited. Awe and appreciation that someone took time out of their day to complete a meaningful ritual, to honor something outside of themselves, and to spread beauty and blessings.

The offerings show up as enclaves of tiny cups with different colored drinks in them, set in cozy, little nooks outside. As incense burning on a fence surrounding a home in a small container specifically crafted for that purpose. As meticulously folded banana leaves with marigolds strategically and lovingly placed at the tops of stairs, at Buddha’s feet, and on the windshields of cars. As an open bottle of water or beer set out for an unseen entity.

There’s a tenderness associated with these offerings; the act of offering itself creates a softening of the energy of the world. We can all soften the world by acknowledging our connection to it and every living thing within it. 🦋

Offerings…
in the most unexpected of places.
Sprinkles…
of thoughtfulness, ritual, and beauty.
Reminders…
of the ripple effects of embodied gratitude.
Sparks…
of awe and appreciation.
Sacredness…
acknowledged.
Invitations...
to pause.

No wonder I rarely know what's going on 😂😅. My favorite is "sugar forest", but there are a lot of other gems here. 💎💎

These days, when visiting a new country I'm intentional about not planning too much and not placing expectations on the experience, and instead approaching it with an open heart 💛✨.

A week in Laos zipped by so fast that we didn't even have time to feel blue about it until we were on our way out. We experienced so much without really even trying, by letting one experience after another unfold naturally. It was a type of time warp, gone in the blink of an eye, yet slowly savored while we were in it. We soaked up the country's peaceful energy and sat with its sadness, too. I'll write more about this later.

Here are some of the things we experienced!

The overnight train from Bangkok to the Thailand/Laos border and another early morning train to cross the Mekong River into Laos. Such a gentle way to travel. 🩵✨

Well, Spark my Little Heart🩵✨

I basically spent the last week in bed sick with who-knows-what. Today, with my energy up a bit, I crawled out of our apartment to go do some laundry around the corner.

Laundromat Bangkok Style: has a Spirit House, open air, open 24 hours, and...offers on-site massages and pedicures!

So, I got myself a divine, yet occasionally aggressive, leg and foot massage and a pedicure while I waited. This place is almost as great as the laundromat I used to go to in Kent, Ohio over 20 years ago where they served margaritas🤣Just kidding😆 This place is much more my speed these days.

They're doing so many things right here😌

Having just moved to a new country and into a hotel-like apartment with only a few familiar things in tow, I've been reflecting on what makes me feel at home at this stage in my life. With it being Mother's Day, or close to it, I was thinking how my first home was inside my mom. That was all I knew, all any of us knew at one point. We were cozy in the warmth of our mom's womb, then, all of a sudden, our realities changed. Just like that, we were blasted out into the chaos and stimulation of the world, and a new reality unfolded. And so it continues throughout life, one reality after another- perhaps none quite as dramatic as the second one, except the grand finale.

All that to say Happy Mother's Day to all of you Givers of Life! I celebrate you for giving all of us our first homes! 🩵✨💙✨💚✨

I'm sitting outside in the shade today having an iced coffee, observing the activity on the street, and reading and writing. There's a nice breeze, but it's steamy at 100 degrees. This sign is hanging in the coffee shop "Relaxation opens the creative space in your heart". Hell yes!!! (Heart Spark! 🩵✨). This is one of the many reasons healing arts are so needed- they allow direct access to our innate peaceful center and creativity. This is the real stuff of life!
