AMITE—Due to continued issues related to the extreme cold weather this week, Tangipahoa Parish School students will return to their classrooms on Monday, January 27.

Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Melissa Stilley said the forecast calls for lows Thursday night below 30 degrees. The continued freezing temperatures present a host of problems for the school system.

“This has been a historically cold weather event, and as we speak, we still have parts of this parish where snow is melting. We anticipate another night of freezing temperatures, and that means ice on the ground,” Stilley said, adding that transportation is a major concern, not only for employees but also for the more than 200 bus routes that students use on a daily basis.

Stilley said the district is still working on repairs from the freeze, including some broken water pipes. There are also several rural schools with low water pressure or no water at all due to the freeze.

“We’re still responding to a number of repairs, including some classrooms where heat is not working properly,” Stilley said. "This will give us one more day to make sure everything is ready for students to ruturn on Monday.”

Principals, custodians, and all 12-month employees are asked to report to their work sites by 10 a.m. on Friday.

The district will continue to post updates on their website, TangiSchools.org, and on their social media channels.

All Tangipahoa Parish Public Schools will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Schools will reopen and classes will resume on Friday, January 24, pending no major facilities issues.

All 12-month employees, principals, and school custodians will return to work on Thursday, January 23 by noon, to prepare for school reopening and conduct the school system's necessary operations.

All other employees (9,10, & 11 month) should work from home on Thursday to complete their required Vector Training modules.

The district’s professional day scheduled for March 17, 2025, will be used as an instructional makeup day for students. Students will attend school on this day.

January 18, 2025

Tangipahoa Parish School System will close Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and Wednesday, January 22, 2025, due to forecasted freezing temperatures over several days and the potential for snow. This decision has been made in advance of the typical 24-hour notice because of the consistency in the forecast and the impacts of this winter storm on our area.
Tangipahoa Parish School System officials have announced that all schools and district offices will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Weather Center in New Orleans has issued a Winter Storm Watch and Cold Weather Advisory for Southeast Louisiana. There is increased confidence in at least moderate to possibly major local travel impacts due to heavy snow.
Tangipahoa Parish School Board meeting has been moved to Thursday, Jan. 23. The Board will meet at 6 p.m. An agenda will be posted on the district website (TangiSchools.org) in advance of that meeting.
Superintendent Melissa M. Stilley stated, “The safety of our students, employees, and families is our top priority. After consulting with weather experts and emergency officials, we determined that it is best to close schools and offices to ensure everyone’s well-being.” We have emergency days built into our school calendar for inclement weather so these two days will not have to be made up later.
The district encourages all families and employees to take necessary precautions to stay safe during these extreme weather conditions.
We expect to reopen schools and offices on Thursday, January 23, 2025. Updates will be provided through email, website, and social media.
