A safety net can be helpful.

But what happens when the safety net becomes the only net?

The more of your essential needs you place under the control of one institution, the more dependent you become on that institution.

And dependence creates leverage.

Whoever controls the necessities has power over the people who need them.

There’s a difference between helping someone and having authority over them.

“I choose to help you.”

vs.

“You will help—and I get to decide how.”

Both can put food on the table.

But they create very different relationships.

Compassion doesn’t automatically require control.

“But who will help the poor?”

It’s a fair question.

But why is the answer automatically government?

People have always helped people.

Families. Neighbors. Churches. Charities. Communities. Friends.

Maybe the real question is:

Do we trust people enough to help each other without being forced to?

It means we should think carefully before giving any institution the power to control the things we need to survive.

The question isn’t whether people should be helped.
The question is: who should have the power to decide?

We keep trying to fix suffering by changing laws, leaders, and systems.

But what if the deeper problem is the moral standard we use to justify our actions?

If coercion is wrong when an individual uses it, why does it become right when enough people authorize it?

If good intentions don’t excuse harming another person, why should they excuse it when done through government?

Maybe lasting change doesn’t begin with changing who holds power.

Maybe it begins with changing what we believe is morally acceptable.

Suffering will continue until morals improve.
