I was reminded of something my grandmother used to say when I was a kid and then I got to thinking of other things she always said and then I was wondering if I had ever read any of those sayings in a book. I couldn’t think of a book that I have read with any of these sayings in it but tbh I didn’t think about it too long. These are a few of the things my grandmother said that I remember from when I was a kid:

Slow as molasses running uphill: she used to describe us grandkids who were not moving fast enough

Don’t be so gommy: someone was bumping into something or tripping over something or being a klutz.

Quakers meeting has begun: she wanted us to be quiet

Careful or your face will freeze like that: don’t make that face…my face didn’t freeze like that but maybe I have a few wrinkles because of it!

Back to school time has started for some little ones or will be starting in the next few weeks for others. Here is another list of sight words that beginner readers might be working on.

Flash cards is another way these words are often practiced.

Writing them in a tray of sand is another sensory idea that helps with reading the words and writing them.

Look what arrived today!

“In the Garden” is a good fit book for beginner readers to practice sight words! Children can read along and see the many things growing in mom’s garden!

A day late but National Mountain Day…who knew there was such a thing?

How did we come up with the name Deer Mountain Publishing, LLC?

Good question.

Well, we are not located on a mountain. When I was thinking of a name, I wanted something that represented strength and perseverance. I am often drawn to nature and mountains and streams and deer. Things that I find to be a place where the noise of the outside world goes away for a bit. So, the name Deer Mountain Publishing LLC seemed fitting.

In New England we have some pretty impressive mountains like the mountain range in this photo!

Yay! Author proofs arrived today! A children’s poetry book that we are hoping to publish in time for Valentine’s Day 2027 and a book about friendship, helping, and transitions from the point of view of a young autistic adult that we are hoping to have ready to publish at the end of 2026 or early 2027!

Thinking about back to school time for little ones, we’ve been working on easy to read children’s books full of sight words! One fun way to practice writing sight words is putting shaving cream on a baking pan and letting the kids write the words in the shaving cream. It’s also a good sensory activity.
